3 Still Standing follows three veteran stand up comics as they struggle to survive the downfall of comedy in a changing world. Contemporaries of Robin Williams, Dana Carvey, and others in the hotbed of San Francisco during the heady 1980s, success seems to be just one great set away for Will Durst, Larry "Bubbles" Brown, and Johnny Steele. Now that the heyday is over and comedy seems to have taken a hiatus, the skilled live performers must seek new ways to reinvent their acts in unfamiliar landscape of social media and online celebrity. With surprisingly serious intent - after all these men are comedians -- the "3" pursue creative ways to make their comebacks. 3 Still Standing is a 30-year roller-coaster ride through comedy's boom and bust, with recollections from contemporaries and close colleagues Rob Schneider and Paula Poundstone. And on a poignant note, we get to hear one of Robin Williams last recorded interviews.

He introduces the panelists: creator, writer, and executive producer Joel Surnow; writers and producers Michael Loceff and Howard Gordon; star and producer Kiefer Sutherland; and cast members Reiko Aylesworth, Carlos Bernard, Sarah Clarke, Michelle Forbes, Laura Harris, Dennis Haysbert, and Penny Johnson Jerald. Surnow opens by discussing how the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks affected the program and how the show's story arcs are written. Gordon talks about bringing his experience from working on The X-Files to 24. Loceff details how his scientific expertise assists in the writing of the show. Next, cast members discuss their understanding of their character as well as the casting process. Surnow details the use of split screens and other production innovations. The seminar takes the form of an interview and question-and-answer session, moderated by Allen Glover, with filmmaker Doug Block, his father Mike and his stepmother Kitty, about the documentary 51 Birch Street. The film was inspired by Doug Block's return to his childhood home following his mother's death, and the discovery of her diaries which revealed the unhappiness that lay behind a seemingly ordinary marriage of more than 50 years. Doug Block explains how this led him to explore his relationship with his father, and what made him decide to turn the very personal story into a documentary film. Mike Block also talks candidly about his marriage to Doug's mother Mina, his changing relationship with Doug through the making of the film, and the happiness he has found with his second wife, Kitty. Glover invites questions from the audience, some of which concern the family relationships portrayed and the Blocks' view of what makes a happy marriage, prompting a number of observations and anecdotes from all three panelists on family life and the unusual situation of having details of their private lives made into a film. Other questions concern the making of the film itself and prompt Doug Block to discuss: his initial pitch and how it developed following advice from Sheila Nevins of HBO; how he achieved the high sound quality in the film as a solo cameraman; and his hopes and plans for the marketing of the documentary. Other members of the audience comment on their own responses to the issues raised in the film, before Glover brings the seminar to a close.
