The film was self-funded by the producer who traveled and interviewed approximately 40 people over a 7 year period of time. Several well-renowned musicians are included in the film including Tony Bennett, Dr. Billy Taylor, singer Jon Hendricks, and jazz pianist Bill Charlap. The film also compiles a wide range of historical information about the jazz pianist including his first TV recording which appeared on CBS Look Up and Live in April 1958, playing "Come Rain or Come Shine". According to producer Bruce Spiegel, it was his during his second interview with drummer Paul Motian that compelled him to complete the film. Spiegel has also noted that several of the people he interviewed in the making of the film are now deceased including Paul Motian, Pat Evans, Connie Atkinson, Jim Hall, Frank Collett, Orrin Keepnews, Gene Lees, Bob Brookmeyer and Don Friedman.

The Greatest Love and the Greatest Sorrow
directed by Christopher Nupen, fl. 1967; composed by Franz Peter Schubert, 1797-1828; conducted by Wolfgang Sawallisch, 1923-2013; produced by Allegro Films, London, England; performed by Lotte Lehmann, 1888-1976, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (Orchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks), Munich, in The Greatest Love and the Greatest Sorrow (Guildford, England: Allegro Films, London, England, 1994), 1 hour 21 mins
Franz Schubert's reputation suffered from the fact that he did things differently, and when a work of art is new and different, and the world cannot categorise or label it, it often takes a long time for the world to understand and accept what that work has to offer. Franz Schubert's reputation suffered from the fact that he did things differently, and when a work of art is new and different, and the world cannot categorise or label it, it often takes a long time for the world to understand and accept what that work has to offer. In some ways, these things haunt Schubert's reputation even today. To complicate the picture still further, Schubert lived, and in some ways his music continues to live, under the shadow of Beethoven. Schubert himself asked the question "Wer vermag nach Beethoven noch etwas zu machen?" (Who would dare to do anything after Beethoven?). The answer, of course, was Franz Peter Schubert and, most notably, in the music that he wrote after the death of his God, Ludvig van Beethoven.
Our title, THE GREATEST LOVE AND THE GREATEST SORROW, is drawn from a dream which Schubert wrote down, in detail, on the 3rd of July, 1822 and which is quoted in full in the film.
