Adelante showcases an Irish Catholic church on the outskirts of Philadelphia that is attracting the patronage of Mexican immigrants in the area. With a personal glimpse at the lives of the vibrant community members - a remarkable Irish American priest, young Mexican immigrants, and older Irish parishioners - the film shows how churchgoers from various backgrounds have forged meaningful and heartfelt bonds of friendship and understanding. Once moribund, the church has become a place for American parishioners to learn about, accept, and embrace a group of immigrants that breathes new life into the community. The film shares the expectant joy of the newly arrived families as they establish lives in an unfamiliar, often bewildering country that offers opportunities entangled with sometimes painful compromises. At its core, Adelante is a celebration of two groups' growth and an embrace of their evolving community.

Agave is Life is a documentary film about mankind’s 10,000 year-long symbiotic alliance with the marvelous agave plant, from which tequila, Mexico’s iconic distilled spirit, is derived. The documentary takes viewers back to a time when hunter-gatherers relied on the agave plant as a source of food, drink, shelter and fiber while roaming desert regions of Mexico and the American Southwest. With the advent of early agriculture, and later, the development of more complex civilizations, agave played a role in the longevity, success, and ritual life of ancient cultures in these regions. Only recently have archaeologists realized how important the agave plant was to pre-Columbian people living in what may seem like marginal environments. It is through their investigations that the story unfolds, starting with feasting rituals and practices among hunter-gatherers and early agave farmers, and ending with current day environmental concerns. Along the way we learn how this unique desert plant, and its products, once integral to human survival, community gatherings, and religious rites, has become embedded in identity, mythology, art, and cultural traditions. After the Spanish Conquest, the once sacred agave was transformed into an economic commodity with meteoric increases in fiber, pulque, and distilled spirit production. In recent decades, however, competition with beer has all but eliminated Mexico’s once flourishing pulque market while synthetics have severely curtailed the agave fiber industry. Tequila and mezcal producers, the survivors of agave’s early commercial success in Mexico, are threatened today by climate change, water scarcity, and the lack of biological diversity in their fields. While biologists and producers struggle to reverse this negative trend, the multi-purpose agave plant rides through another transition for 21st century consumers. Hope for the plant’s future may one day rely upon more traditional agricultural methods and, as in the past, the use of its many products --- from fuel to musical instruments.

Started only a week after the Cuban missile crisis and designed to be Cuba's answer to both Sergei Eisenstein's propaganda masterpiece, Potemkin and Jean-Luc Godard's freewheeling romance, Breathless, I Am Cuba turned out to be something quite unique - a wildly schizophrenic celebration of Communist kitsch, mixing Slavic solemnity with Latin sensuality. The plot, or rather plots, feverishly explore the seductive, decadent (and marvelously photogenic) world of Batista's Cuba - deliriously juxtaposing images of rich Americans and bikini-clad beauties sipping cocktails poolside with scenes of ramshackle slums filled with hungry children and gaunt old people. Using wide-angle lenses that distort and magnify and filters that transform palm trees into giant white feathers, Urusevsky's acrobatic camera achieves wild gravity-defying angles as it glides effortlessly through long continuous shots. But I Am Cuba is not just a catalog of bravura technique - it also succeeds in exploring the innermost feelings of the characters and their often desperate situations. Shown unsubtitled at the San Francisco International Film Festival, I Am Cuba received two standing ovations - during the screening. The first movie ever jointly presented by master filmmakers Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola, I Am Cuba is one of the great discoveries in cinema. It will change your view of cinema forever!

Drawing on unpublished diaries, memoirs and letters, The Great War tells the rich and complex story of World War I through the voices of nurses, journalists, aviators and the American troops who came to be known as “doughboys.” The series explores the experiences of African-American and Latino soldiers, suffragists, Native American “code talkers” and others whose participation in the war to “make the world safe for democracy” has been largely forgotten. The Great War explores how a brilliant PR man bolstered support for the war in a country hesitant to put lives on the line for a foreign conflict; how President Woodrow Wilson steered the nation through years of neutrality, only to reluctantly lead America into the bloodiest conflict the world had ever seen, thereby transforming the United States into a dominant player on the international stage; and how the ardent patriotism and determination to support America’s crusade for liberty abroad led to one of the most oppressive crackdowns on civil liberties at home in U.S. history. It is a story of heroism and sacrifice that would ultimately claim 15 million lives and profoundly change the world forever.
