LOS ANGELES--Speeding around a curve, shortly after leaving the Los Angeles station, a San Diego-bound commuter train leaves the rail and overturns, killing 29 and injuring 142, most of them service men returning to the naval base after furlough. The wreck is one of the worst in California's railroad history.

A NEW NATION IS BORN
Three days of festivities mark the emergence of the new nation of Ghana, first Negro colony in Africa to gain its independence. Vice-President and Mrs. Nixon represent the U.S., Ralph Bunche, the U.N., at the observances, which are marked by dancing and a beauty contest as well as a military review.
SHIP COLLISION.
A naval gasoline tender collides with a freighter off New Castle, Del., on the Delaware River. The fuel-laden tender was cut in half, and exploded. At latest report, at least 9 were still missing in the disaster.
PRINCESS CAROLINE, heir apparent to Monaco's throne, is baptised in a solemn ceremony which throngs the cathedral. Godmother Margaret Davis holds the baby Princess as Prince Rainier and Princess Grace watch proudly.
MARDI GRAS.
New Orleans celebrates Carnival with traditional mirth and gaiety. The spectacular Rex Parade highlights the days of merry-making that precede Lent in the tourist-packed Crescent City.
SPORTS
GOLDEN GLOVES.
New York sees fistic thrills in the Eastern championships of the Golden Gloves. In the 112-lb. semi-finals, Bob LaFebvre of Vermont kayo's South Carolina's Charlie Kennett. 135-pounders Vince Shomo of New York and Jimmy Biggs of Washington mix it up briskly--Shomo flattening his foe with a terrific pounding.
SPRING TRAINING
MILWAUKEE BRAVES, training at Brandenton, warm up for another crack at the N.L. pennant. With rookie pitcher Juan Pizarro added to a strong mound staff, and solid hitting and defense, They're a strong threat to Brooklyn, again.
CLEVELAND INDIANS, with a new man at the helm, manager Kirby Farrell, are also pointing to climb out of their perennial second-place slot. Pitchers a-plenty as always--and fresh determination to scalp the Yankees point to a thrilling season.
NEW YORK GIANTS, handicapped by the draft and a string of injuries, prepare at Phoenix to boost their standing from last year's 6th place. Andre Rodgers, a strapping rookie, may provide the added punch the team needs. (New York only)
BOSTON RED SOX, their training schedule at Sarasota slowed by days of rain, show flashes of season form as they work out under manager Pinky Higgins' scrutiny. No prophecies from him, but Ted Williams and company are aiming high in the first division. (Boston only)

SECRETARY OF STATE JOHN FOSTER DULLES leaves Walter Reed Hospital for another brief and leisurely drive thru Rock Creek Park. He stops at his home for a visit with his pet poodle, Pepin. Pepin has a slight cold, said Mr. Dulles.
VERTICAL VERONIQUE:

A new Swiss truck is demonstrated in Germany. A double-jointed chassis affair with a six wheel drive. It can climb a barrier higher than its front wheels. And can conquer just about any terrain it encounters.

CANADA DOWNS U.S.S.R. IN WORLD HOCKEY:
At Prague, Czechoslovakia, Canada's Belleville McFarlands win the world amateur ice hockey championship. Canada scored 21 goals and allowed seven in its five games. One of Canada's goal getters was Pete Conacher, one of several former professionals who augmented the Belleville team. It was Canada's 18th world title in 27 competitions and the second in a row.

The most disgraceful anti-American demonstration yet seen. With inexcusable affronts to America and the free world - insults and indignities hurled at the flag of the United States and its Vice-President. The Nixon's are enthusiastically and proudly welcomed home at National Airport, Washington. President Eisenhower and top leaders of government are on hand to greet them. Over half-million people line the route to the White House. A salute to courage. CURRENT AGONY OF FRANCE A general strike by French settlers in Algeria and mob rioting protesting the proposed Pflimlin government culminates in an Army coup. A junta led by General Jacques Massu seizes power and calls on the long silent General Charles De Gaulle to take over power in France. Faced with the gravest crisis since World War II, the Assembly votes the Pflimlin government into office by a wide margin - as De Gaulle indicates his readiness to assume leadership. The fabric of France hangs by a thread with the nation on the brink of civil war.

HERO'S WELCOME FOR VICE-PRESIDENT NIXON AFTER VENEZUELA MOB ATTACK
The motorcade of Vice-President and Mrs. Richard Nixon is halted by mob violence in Venezuela - during the noon day rush hour. The most disgraceful anti-American demonstration yet seen. With inexcusable affronts to America and the free world - insults and indignities hurled at the flag of the United States and it's Vice-President.
The Nixon's are enthusiastically and proudly welcomed home at National Airport, Washington. President Eisenhower and top leaders of government are on hand to greet them. Over half-million people line the route to the White House. A salute to courage.
CURRENT AGONY OF FRANCE
A general strike by French settlers in Algeria and mob rioting protesting the proposed Pflimlin government culminates in an Army coup. A junta led by General Jacques Massu seizes power and calls on the long silent General Charles De Gaulle to take over power in France. Faced with the gravest crisis since World War II, the Assembly votes the Pflimlin government into office by a wide margin - as De Gaulle indicates his readiness to assume leadership. The fabric of France hangs by a thread with the nation on the brink of civil war.

The Algerian revolt with its demands for the ascension of General Charles De Gaulle to power, has made a meaningful move across the Mediterranean. HISTORY ON THE MARCH!! DE GAULLE'S DATE WITH DESTINY The deepening political crisis of the Fourth Republic continues to be complicated by an international crisis. The Algerian revolt with its demands for the ascension of General Charles De Gaulle to power, has made a meaningful move across the Mediterranean. Active revolt is within a hundred miles of Metropolitan France. Corsica (birthplace of Napoleon) is controlled by committees of public safety - Algerian style. With General Massu in command the Island is quiet under the new regime. Actual fighting has again broken out in Tunisia, Between French troops quartered there and the Tunisian forces that have been blockading them. Ground shooting and bombing from the air. Tension soars to a dangerous pitch. The grave situation is a warning to all Frenchmen that their political difficulties must be resolved and speedily. The world looks to France for decisions which will restore the unity and enhance the strength of a valued partner in the Alliance of the free world. ATOMIC ELECTRIC PLANT: From the White House via remote control, the President ignites the flow of power from the Shippingport Atomic Power Station in Pennsylvania. Feeding atomically generated electricity into thousands of homes. FIFTEEN MILLION DOLLAR OIL BLAZE: In Long Beach, California, an explosion of huge storage tanks of oil sets off an inferno. Fire rages out of control. Firemen are handicapped by failing water pressure. It is a desperate battle to bring the conflagration under control. THOSE DAZZLING DAYS: One of London's top couturiers looks forward- several months, to the Fall. Then turns back the clock two decades. Back to those tantalizing twenties....he exploits chemises, bangs, bangles, baubles, sequins and well, Oh, my!! France in the 169 years since the storming of the Bastille, has been twice an empire. Thrice under Kingdom rule. Once a Nazi-supported dictatorship. Four times a Republic. A new and fateful turning has finally come to France. Her Fourth Republic, a sorry chronicle of confusion and dissension is starting on a new course under the leadership of aloof, inscrutable, mystical General Charles de Gaulle. The General confronts an awesome array of problems that beset the French nation. The world looks hopefully to the war-time hero to open the door to a new France.
UNKNOWN SOLDIERS ENSHRINED:
Solemn ceremonies in the nation's Capitol mark the entombment of the Unknown Soldiers of World War II and of the Korean heartbreak - in Arlington National Cemetery. President Eisenhower confers the Medal of Honor, America's highest award for valor, on each of the soldiers, highlighting the Memorial Day observance.
INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA:
The 42nd 500-mile Classic is marred by tragedy. Pat O'Connor, 29, native of North Vernon, Indiana loses his life in the crash at the northeast corner of the speedway track in a 15-car collision. Ed Elisian, 31, whose faulty judgment caused the collision has been barred from further auto racing in the United States. Arizona cowboy, Jimmy Bryan, 29, driving the only car of the first seven that missed the collision won the race with the average speed of 133.791 miles an hour.
