Following the Ottoman Empire’s defeat in World War I, Cyprus was annexed by Britain in 1925 to protect its sea route to India via the Suez Canal. The terror group EOKA (Ethnikí Organosis Kipriakou Agonos) was an underground organization formed by the former Greek army officer George Grivas in 1955 to force the British out of Cyprus and unite the Mediterranean island with Greece. Taking the name of the legendary Cypriot hero Dighenis, Grivas conducted his guerrilla war from a secret hideout in the Troodos Mountains. In a campaign of bombing, sabotage and murder, EOKA wrecked government offices, police stations and military installations all over the island, and the radio transmitter in Nicosia was blown up. Turkish Cypriots, who wanted British rule to continue, were also targetted on a lesser scale. During its four-year-long campaign in the 1950s, EOKA was responsible for around 600 deaths. The British responded with emergency measures that included curfews, arrests, imprisonment and the death penalty, but these measures failed to bring the situation under control. Around 10,000 British troops were deployed to try to track down Grivas, but he successfully evaded capture.Eventually, tired of the troublesome protests, the British decided to make Cyprus a republic within the Commonwealth. Grivas ordered a cease-fire – reluctantly (he had not achieved union with Greece). Unlike many other terrorist leaders whose careers ended in death and ignominy, Grivas was promoted to general and feted as a hero, until he was disgraced in a failed coup against the Greek government.

This film documents a war where neither side was victorious nor defeated; a struggle that came very close to thermonuclear war, and that still resonates in the geopolitical machinations between East and West. From 1950 to 1953 more than a million men fought under the United Nations flag, with most of the manpower from the United States. More Americans were killed in that war than in Vietnam. The boundary between North and South remains the most militarized zone in the world. The war is still shrouded in secrecy; questions remain about whether biological weapons were used. Korea: The Unfinished War combines archival footage, first person accounts with soldiers and civilians on both sides, direct quotes from Truman, MacArthur, Mao and Stalin, clearly showing their roles in the conflict. Atrocities on both sides are cited. In the years since there has been an uneasy truce, often broken, between the Koreas. But beyond that, the Korean War bequeathed a global hangover which haunts mankind today — biological weapons. The films investigates Chinese and North Korean charges that the U.S. secretly deployed these weapons during the war. This important film provides the background for today's fear of nuclear testing by North Korea. College Adult
