When President Bush and some members of Congress proposed guest worker programs as part of new immigration reform legislation, it was as though nothing like this had existed before. Yet since 1986, thousands of Mexican men have legally entered the United States to work here, because of the little known H-2A guestworker program, put in effect during the Reagan years. Filmed on both sides of the border, the documentary chronicles the life of such farm- workers while looking at the issues surrounding the program. The film focuses on a 66-year-old Mexican farmer, Candelario Moreno Gonzales, who works on the tobacco, cucumber and pepper fields of the Western Farms in North Carolina . He has made this annual trip for forty years, initially as an undocumented immigrant for which he was jailed three times. Now too old to risk illegal crossings, he has paid as much as a thousand dollars for his bus fare and other costs of participating in the program. Although he is twenty years older than most of his fellow workers, he puts in the same grueling hours with no hope of citizenship and the benefits that go along with it. The film also shows the troubles of his employer, Len Wester, who may loose his farm because of drought. Wester, like many US farmers, is dependent on foreign farm laborers to sustain his farm. Candelario loves his home and family but the deteriorating condition of Mexico's rural economy leave him little choice but to continue his yearly trek. As he says " I need to go as long as I can work. I'm old. The work has worn me down and made me tired. My family needs me at home in Mexico, but I need to be here too." High School College Adult

UNIVERSAL NEWSPAPER NEWSREEL VOLUME V NUMBER 127
PRESIDENT ASKS NATION FOR FULL CONFIDENCE IN HIS RECOVERY PLAN
WASHINGTON, D. C.--In a stirring personal appeal to the rank and file of American citizens, the new Chief Executive gives a clear and simple explanation of the hectic financial events of the day, telling the reasons for the bank holiday and the currency legislation in plain and straight forward language, and calling for continued trust and support by the people in his battle to restore the soundness of the country's money and banking system.
The most remarkable message ever spoken by a President to the people. Basic facts and data on the workings of our financial institutions. The Prophet of the New Deal explains the wherefores of the new bank Commandments.
WILLIAM GREEN CALLS UNION MEN TO SUPPORT OF ROOSEVELT IN CRISIS
NEW YORK, N. Y.--The head of the great American Federation of Labor, in a forceful message to the workers of the nation, strongly urges all to have complete faith in the President of the United States and to give their wholehearted co-operation and backing to the Administration's plans for the country's financial and economic recovery.
120 DEAD, 5000 HURT AS 'QUAKE WRECKS WEST COAST CITIES
LONG BEACH, Cal.--Appalling scenes of the holocaust which laid low a score of flourishing Pacific Coast communities, killing or maiming thousands, demolishing entire towns and rolling up property damages of almost $50,000,000.
The worst cataclysm on American soil in almost 30 years, the earthquake consisted of recurring shocks over a period of two days, with many violent tremors which shattered buildings and homes, turning peaceful and progressive business and residence districts into piles of debris under which many hapless victims lay entombed. Indescribable scenes of tragedy and confusion are on every hand.
Hundreds of thousands are homeless, many of them with nothing remaining of their domiciles but piles of brick or splintered wood. Many others, fearful of their rocking, swaying residences, are living a nomadic life in the open, depending upon relief agencies for food and covering.
Amazing efficiency by the local agencies and by the State and Federal Governments prevents greater loss of life and greater misery and suffering from exposure. While sailors from the U. S. fleet and various veteran organizations police the stricken area, Army and National Guard units set up emergency kitchens and supply food and blankets to the refugees.
Even while the tremors still continue, reconstruction begins with a vim, dangerous walls being pulled down and debris cleaned from the streets.
One of the worst tragedies in American history, with never-to-be-forgotten vistas of wreckage and demolition.
