1959 IN REVIEW
A year of unprecedented travel, ceremonies and consultations by the great power leaders, with the outstanding highlights being Vice-President Nixon's visit to Russia and debate with Premier Khrushchev, Khrushchev's fabulous, flamboyant tour of America, and President Eisenhower's historic and unprecedented tour of 11 Free World Nations.
The exploration of Space proceeded with notable achievements by both the Soviet and the United States, the Reds reaching the moon for the first time, and giving mankind its first glimpse of the other side, and America making major strides in preparing for man's first actual voyage into space.
In this hemisphere, Cuba's first year under the reign of Fidel Castro and the opening of the Canadian-U.S. St. Lawrence Seaway in joint ceremonies by Ike and Queen Elizabeth topped the news. Hawaii followed Alaska into the Union, with exultant celebrations throughout the Islands to mark the dream fulfilled.
Romance made news, with the same fairy tale theme thrice repeated. Prince Akihito of Japan married a pretty commoner, Mishiko Shoda; multi-millionaire's son Stephen Rockefeller wed a former family maid, Anne Marie Rasmussen, and the Shah of Iran married a former bobby-soxer, Farah Diba.
Japan was ravaged by the worst typhoon in its history, with a toll of 5,000 lives. John Foster Dulles passed away after a long and valiant fight against cancer.
In Asia, Communist China manifested growing aggressiveness, turning Tibet into a bloody repetition of Hungary. The Dalai Lama and thousands of his subjects fled to India, which later in the year was embroiled in armed clashes with Red China over border disputes. In Southeast Asia, Red puppet forces menaced the tiny but strategic state of Laos. Grave omens for the future from the rapidly mobilizing masses of mainland China, a dark undercurrent to the mood of hope with which Ike's (illegible text)

ADVANCING IN THE ADMIRALTIES
General MacArthur stated to his troops in the Admiralties--"it is imperative that we hold this position against any attack."
We watch LST boats, bristling with Yanks, scrape to a stop at water's edge, in Los Negros. Supporting their advance, naval guns blast into action, and damaging hits are recorded.
Our infantry advances and we see scattered Jap corpses. Manos airfield is reached, and the action livens. Our wounded are hastily brought out as the Medical Corps springs to their aid. Transfusions are given and the surgeons operate in field tents.
Jap reinforcements from nearby islands enter the battle, then we stumble unto one of the starkest scenes of this war. Piles of Jap corpses, in grotesque positions are discovered. A high percentage of them are victims of the fanatical Jap self-destruction rite--Hara Kiri.
Yank hand grenades and machine guns exterminate the remaining Japs. Los Negros, Mamote airfield and the valuable Manos airstrip are taken, and General MacArthur's orders are carried out.
PARAPAKING IN BURMA
Huge C-47 Troop Carrier planes drop parachute-bales of food to isolated units, from low levels, with Norden bomb sight accuracy. Elaborate smoke or cloth panel signals reveal the presence of Allied troops, whereupon transport crews heave and kick the bales overboard, out of their tail-assembly's way. A dramatic instance of Yank air supremacy playing an effective role in the Burma drives.

BATTLING KELLY

THE BIG "E" COMES HOME
The big "E," the aircraft carrier Enterprise, the fightingest ship in our Pacific fleets, comes home with a record so illustrious that she probably will be retired as a national symbol. She started fighting near Hawaii on Pearl Harbor Day, then earned 18 combat stars while fighting Japs all over the Pacific.
She is pictured as she was attacked by desperate Kamikaze pilots, this year. Although knocking many suicide pilots out of the sky, one bomb-laden maniac succeeds in getting through to smash into her stern. The explosion blows her forward elevator 400 feet skyward, kills 14 men and wounds 34. All fires are extinguished within 17 minutes and the wounded Enterprise wards off other attacking planes.
Small wonder that she is cheered to the echo as she slowly steams into port, the pride of the Navy and of the nation.

FIRST PICTURES! OCCUPATION OF JAPAN
Under the terms outlined by General MacArthur, the Allied forces of occupation move into Japan.
The powerful U. S. 3rd Fleet lifts anchor and steams into Tokio's lower bay, where Jap pilots board our vessels to assure safe conduct through the enemy waters. Admiral Halsey on his flagship, the dreadnaught Missouri, welcomes Admiral Nimitz aboard.
From Okinawa, huge air transports, including the "Tokio Trolley," bring the 11th Airborne Division to a landing at Atsugi Airfield, 18 miles from Tokio. Jap officers turn the field over to the Yanks, and the Stars and Stripes are raised over the enemy homeland. Jap soldiers become more bewildered as overjoyed Yank soldiers are freed from prison camps. The field made ready, General MacArthur arrives in his plane--the "Bataan." Sporting his corn cob pipe, he is soon whisked away by car to Yokohama, where after driving through the ruined city he sets up headquarters at The Grand Hotel.
