“He is probably the greatest musician of our time. There’s no doubt about it.” – Zubin Mehta on Daniel BarenboimOn the occasion of the anniversary of Daniel Barenboim, one of the most renowned conductors and pianists of our times, an all-embracing portrait of this outstanding musical personality has been created. The documentary accompanies Maestro Barenboim in his eventful working life and at the same time gives a review of Barenboim’s long musical career, from its beginnings to today. Shot in Barenboim’s native town Buenos Aires, in Ramallah and in Berlin, the movie captures rehearsals and performances of the Maestro and his West-Eastern Divan Orchestra at the Teatro Colón and the Staatsoper Berlin. Furthermore, it covers milestone events in Berlin: the opening of the Pierre Boulez Saal – which is part of the Barenboim-Said-Academy and has been brought into being by Daniel Barenboim – and the grand re-opening of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, where Barenboim, in his function as General Music Director, performs together with the Staatskapelle Berlin. In several interviews, long-term companions of the exceptional musician – among them Martha Argerich, Zubin Mehta, Waltraud Meier, his son Michael Barenboim and director Wim Wenders – give a very personal insight into the experiences they shared with Daniel Barenboim throughout the years.

Shostakovich is arguably one of the great composers of the 20th Century. In commemoration of the 40th anniversary of his death in 1975 we take the opportunity to revisit his life and works. Never before has a filmmaker had the chance to draw on the complete symphonies of the composer, his six concertos, his opera Lady Macbeth and chamber music to demonstrate how Shostakovich managed to uphold creative freedom in spite of the demands of Social Realism. We hear about major setbacks in 1936 and 1948 through rare interviews with the composer himself and his colleague Rudolf Barshai. An evaluation of key works by Valery Gergiev rounds off this picture of a genius, highly decorated and frequently misunderstood.

This documentary offers a careful use of the epistolary of the “protagonist”, entrusting to letters written and received by Chopin the task of explaining the narrative junctures of his life. This documentary offers a careful use of the epistolary of the “protagonist”, entrusting to letters written and received by Chopin the task of explaining the narrative junctures of his life. The writings are interpreted by Fabrizio Bentivoglio and Margherita Buy (who provides the voice for George Sand, the French writer with whom Chopin had a relationship). Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849) was born in Zelazowa Wola, near Warsaw, in a setting far from the limelight of the great musical tradition, but at the same time he absorbs the winds that blow in from that same tradition. His education is the fruit of Polish culture and cannot be separated from that, but he also feels the influence of the three main cultures of the time: Italian, Austro-Germanand French. This documentary describes the places that provided the basis for the young composer’s imagination, from the capital Warsaw to rural Poland, where Chopin spends part of his childhood and is formed as a man and a musician, on to Paris, theatre of the second half of the musician’s life. The film evokes the almost Gogolian atmosphere of the Polish countryside: Zelazowa Wola, Szafarnia, Torun are described through documentary footage that restores the suggestiveness, which is still alive today, of the folklore Chopin was so attached to. Without forgetting, naturally, Warsaw, with the world’s most important piano competition, preserves the memory of one of the most important characters of European culture.
