Think of today's top operatic voices, and black owners of them are as likely to come into the list as white ones: Willard White, Jessye Norman and Kathleen Battle to name only three. We know it wasn't always thus - Paul Robeson's struggles to be recognized as a great singer, instead of a black singer, went on for many decades. But this program reveals just how hard the journey to acceptance of America's black singers has been. It opens with one of the greatest voices of the 20th century: Marian Anderson and a clip of her magnificent performance of 'Ave Maria. The film offers newsreel footage from her landmark 1939 concert at the Lincoln Memorial, which was held after the daughters of the American Revolution denied her access to their Constitution Hall venue. But the black tradition of classical singing goes back even further: Before Leontye Price, Jessye Norman and even before Marian Anderson, Sissieretta Jones was arguably the greatest black performer of 19th century America and certainly the first great black diva. Sissieretta Jones, the Black Patti, an allusion to Italian American Primadonna Adelina Patti, performed before four American presidents, mesmerized critics and audiences alike and was so successful that at one concert in New Jersey 1,000 visitors had to be turned away. The film Aida's Brothers and Sisters intends to focus the viewer's gaze particularly on the black classic and also on the fascinating mixed forms that have developed from the confrontation of white and black music in the last hundred years. The encounter with the powerful personalities of the singers and their music will reveal the humor, the lust for life, and the spiritual depth of black culture, and will perhaps add a dash of color to a white fin de siècle culture that is in danger of contracting anemia. A fascinating documentary with historical and contemporary film and video records of performances by Leontyne Price, Simon Estes, Grace Bumbry, Reri Grist and many others.

Andre George Previn’s simultaneous world careers as a director, composer and pianist are extremely thrilling and interesting, and they cannot be told in just a few words. The names of his teachers and the artists and orchestras with which he worked belong to the select few of their field in the classic scene. Previn was born in 1929 in Berlin and emigrated to the United States in 1938 where his family settled in Hollywood. He was awarded the Oscar a total of four times. Along with his work as a director he has also composed orchestra and chamber music as well as two stage entertainments. He however doesn’t consider himself as belonging to the musical avant-garde.

With this, his only Bach recording, Herbert Blomstedt pays homage to Bach and the city of Leipzig. It recorded in 2005 at the Leipzig Bach Festival, which is widely regarded as the world’s leading festival celebrating Johann Sebastian Bach. This concert of Bach’s masterwork, written at the end of his tenure as the 18th Gewandhauskapellmeister did not really mark the end of Blomstedt’s fruitful collaboration with the traditional orchestra. The Swedish conductor will continue to act as an honorary musical director to the ensemble. Performed with leading Bach singers at St. Thomas’ Church, Leipzig, the church for which Bach conceived his works, this homage to Bach was a touching farewell to Herbert Blomstedt from his Leipzig audience. The state-of-the-art DVD also features the popular conductor in a bonus track, where Herbert Blomstedt introduces the audience to the B minor Mass, the most important of Bach’s sacred works.

Beautifully Scary explores the landscape of contemporary music in America in the 20th century and beyond. The documentary features generations of composers who represent trends in modern classical music. Interviews with some of the most influential composers in American such as Elliott Carter, Milton Babbitt and Philip Glass, gives the viewer a strong sense of the circumstances that shaped the classical tradition in America, and the creative visions that have emerged from it. The film begins with a short history of modern music in America, highlighting some of the great American composers (Ives, Copland, Cage, Bernstein) through archival photos and film footage combined with short musical excerpts. This section also includes brief references to the earlier European influences (Wagner, Debussy, Schoenberg, Stravinsky). Composers such as Steve Reich, George Crumb, Bright Sheng and Pauline Oliveros talk about their lives, and how their work has contributed to the evolution of the form. They also discuss their music, and the effect of their approaches to composition upon the contemporary music scene. The documentary includes short excerpts from performances of works by Joan Tower, Tan Dun, Christopher Rouse and John Corigliano. The instrumental forces range from solo and small instrumental combinations, to full orchestra, showing the broad expressive range of their unique music. The film draws attention to the innovative work being done, and it's importance to the fabric of modern American culture.
