They cannot own land or get an education and are condemned to the most menial jobs, such as sweeping streets, cleaning toilets, or butchering animals. In the villages they are subject to abuse, sometimes killed for minor slights to the landowners. From birth, all alternatives are closed to them. While the government has tried to improve the condition of the untouchables, these attempts have been met by strong resistance. Upper caste Hindus profit from this source of cheap labor. In addition, the Hindu notion that the untouchable is impure is deeply ingrained. However, a few leaders have arisen from their ranks, who work for change. College Adult

Banned from the Jakarta International Film Festival, this 2005 documentary examines the aftermath of the massacre of 74 East Timorese independence supporters by pro-Indonesian militiamen as the survivors try to heal themselves and their community. Shot over the course of a year, this film is an intimate look into the lives of ordinary folk struggling to rebuild their homes and an exploration into the very universal themes of justice and reconciliation. The directors - James Leong and Lynn Lee -- started their research in 2003, and it evolved into a year-long project. As they say: 'Our time in Passabe was often frustrating, but also enlightening and thought-provoking. It exposed us to a rare and fascinating culture and opened our eyes to issues and ideas we had never stopped to consider. The journey has reshaped our perceptions of good and evil, justice and truth, forgiveness and redemption.'
