18 Ius Soli (the right of soil) is a 2012 award-winning grassroots Italian documentary about the issues of the citizenship for 1,000,000 of kids born in Italy. Officially selected at Black Berlin International Cinema. This documentary “examines” the law that denies citizenship to young people born in Italy of immigrant parents, because they have no Italian blood. It follows 18 stories of girls and boys born and raised in Italy whose parents are originally from African, Asian, and South American countries who moved to and have long-lived in different areas of Italy. They are children of immigrants: go to school in Italy, speak the language and dialects, have never even been to the countries that their parents are from, nor do they speak their parents’ language. Yet they are not recognized Italian citizens. To obtain the Italian citizenship, they have to go through a lengthy and complicated application process and can only do so after they’ve turned 18 years old – a process that doesn’t always end positively for the applicant, resulting in serious and unavoidable problems of social inclusion and identity. There are presently 1,000,000 of young people who were born in Italy, speak Italian fluently, have studied in Italian schools and have lived in Italy all their lives, yet, they are not entitles to Italian citizenship. It is a reality lived by Italian soccer champion Mario Balotelli and countless others.

In this book, based on intensive fieldwork in a major French provincial city (Lyon), Grillo shows how an anthropological perspective enhances our understanding of institutional processes and ideological forces in industrial society, presenting a detailed account of relations between the indigenous French population and immigrant workers and their families of non-French origin. The framework of the book is provided by two linked themes. First, the study shows how the situation of immigrants is represented ideologically by various elements of French society, as well as by the immigrants themselves, in different ways as 'problematic.' Dr Grillo examines this ideological dimension initially by contrasting the discourses of the political Right and Left concerning a range of immigrant 'problems', for example in the fields of housing, family life, school, language use and work. He then shows that not only are there significant ideological differences within both Right and Left, but also similarities between them which stem from certain basic cultural preoccupations of French thought.

Welcome culture was the focus of attention yesterday, now it's about integration and the question of how it can succeed.
The 95-minute documentary ALLES GUT tells of two children who come to Germany at the time with their families: Djaner, 7, from Macedonia and Ghofran, 11, from Syria. Their escape ends in Hamburg, in the middle-class district of Othmarschen. But how do they find each other in their new life?
Djaner ran away from poverty and discrimination with his brother Mahmud and his depressive mother. On his first day at a German elementary school, a dream comes true for the Roma boy. In his home school meant for him fear of beatings. In Hamburg Djaner wants to belong, as do hundreds of thousands of other refugee children who suddenly have to be schooled in Germany.
Ghofran initially hopes she can leave Germany soon. She listens to Arab hiphop and lives on in her thoughts in Syria, while her father Adel in Hamburg struggles to arrive forever. At school, where Ghofran learns German, she meets girls who are allowed to do everything. What does she want to accept, what is she willing to give up?
Award-winning author Pia Lenz ('Hudekamp - Ein Heimatfilm') accompanies Djaner and Ghofran for a year in their search for themselves and a new life for their powerful, very moving documentary ALLES GUT. The perspective of the children opens up a new, unadorned view of the integration of hundreds of thousands of refugees and the question: How do we give a home to those most in need of a future?

Israelis on the Move” tells the story of young adults from the Former Soviet Union as they beat a path to Israeliness. Based on analyses of their immigration stories, the book offers a new perspective in immigration studies that sees belonging as achieved not through the adoption of foundational national ethos of the new place, but rather through participation in local debates about this ethos. More particularly, the book examines the way in which the young immigrants shape their belonging to Israel through a reading of the homecoming ethos that awards them automatic citizenship. Based on an interpretation of instantiations of the homecoming ethos in everyday life, they form an affinity to their new home, construct their identity, and locate themselves within Israeli society. In doing so they are concerned with decoding, interpreting and critiquing the building blocks of the ethos: the memory of the Holocaust and anti-Semitism, military service, the new Jew, and allegiance to their new place. The book shows how the immigrants hold onto an ethos that promises them recognition and inclusion within the ethno-religious nation. At the same time, they resist the total demands Imposed by the ethos, and criticize Zionist premises that are considered as taken for granted. We term this double, interrelated movement critical belonging, a concept that suggests that the immigrants’ belonging to the new place does not entail the unconditional acceptance of local ethos, while at the same time implying that their critique does not entail their rejection of the new place or a retreat into socio-cultural enclaves.
