A report on the massive number of migrant families crossing the U.S. southern border and the Department of Homeland Security’s attempts to handle the large crowds. Kevin McAleenan, the acting Secretary of Homeland Security, who enforced the department’s now defunct policy of separating children from parents at the border as a way of deterring migrants from attempting to cross, explains how DHS facilities are overrun with families, which they are not equipped to handle. McAleenan also explains how U.S. law allows migrant families to remain in the country until they’ve seen a judge, which can take up to five years with the current case backlog. McAleenan calls the situation at the border “absolutely both” a humanitarian and national security crisis. Includes interviews with Marcelino Medina, a U.S. border patrol officer; Chief Patrol Agent Rudy Karisch; Sister Norma Pimental, who runs a Catholic Charities Respite Center in Texas; and migrant families.

Like thousands of New Yorkers who live downtown, the filmmaker Beverly Peterson witnessed close-up the horrific events of 9/11. Her first instinct was to grab her video camera in order to bear witness to the tragedy unfolding. Filming became a way of surviving the following months as she documented what was happening to her community. Beverly and her husband were forced to evacuate their apartment on West Broadway for several weeks. Then the hard work of cleaning up began. Some businesses in the neighborhood had been forced to close, others limped along, helping each other survive. Many were owned by recent immigrants to N.Y.C. who are featured in the film. The community was forced to organize to demand financial assistance from the government for the cleaning and rehabilitation of individual residences and businesses. They are still rebuilding their lives thanks to their strenuous efforts to help themselves and each other. High School College

An extremely powerful film showing the terrible risks that Africans will take to get to The Promised Land. Juan Medina, an Argentine photographer, arrived in Spain twenty years ago. Medina was looking for a better life and decided to settle in Fuerteventura, attracted by a tourist slogan portraying it as 'The Tranquil Isle.' He could not have guessed then that he would be an eye witness to the tragic exodus of Africans to Europe. Over the last ten years, 32,000 Africans have landed on the coast of the Canary Islands in makeshift boats. Many have died in the attempt, drowned in the 100 or so kilometers of seas separating the islands from the African mainland. One night in November 2004, Juan was on board a Spanish police patrol vessel. A drifting craft was spotted full of immigrants. But the makeshift boat capsized: 11 people drowned and 29 were rescued.

The 20th Century has been marked by a return to ethnic and religious affiliations and identifications which continue to be in the foreground of political discourse. The rise of religious groups is represented by the media as a turbulent phenomenon, which spikes new conflicts globally. These representations of collective identities are politically utilized. Resource conflicts and controversies about citizenship and residence rights become more difficult to solve, because notions of identity fuel them with generalizations and prejudice. In this video, political anthropologist GÜNTHER SCHLEE argues that collective and individual identities (i.e. which collective identity an individual opts for) are subject to change over time. The ways in which groups and individuals identify often result from a dynamic interplay between political advantages, economic opportunities and plausible identity options for personal choice. Looking at the process of identification and analyzing which factors influence it may help to improve human organization on all levels.

Alexiei, a nineteen year old Russian recruit, is being flown to perform his military service at a small base in a remote part of Northern Russia. This base is one of few such frontier posts on the Arctic Ocean, guarding the vast, uninhabited parts of the Russian country. Besides Alexiei, five other soldiers are stationed there.
All five have been there for a long time, perhaps too long, each of them carrying their personal worries and secrets. It is hard for them imagining going back to a life with real people and to reconnect with their past. It is easier to continue their absurd service of guarding this submerged area always covered in snow, hundreds of miles away from the nearest human settlement. Alexiei will not only learn how to survive in extreme winter conditions, he may just be taught the most valuable lesson of his life.

The economic crisis is taking its toll in China, with factory closures, a sharp fall in exports, and 20 million unemployed. Although the trend is worrying in a land that has become the world's workshop, many see the crisis as opening up new opportunities. We visit Wenzhou, one of the country's industrial powerhouses. Many European-Chinese who originally came from here are now interested in investing in their native land, attracted by China's strong economic growth. On the down side, workers drawn to the cities by factory jobs are having a lean time. Many of these rural migrants have been laid off because of the crisis and some have returned home to China's poorest provinces and wait for better times. The government is now pursuing policies to support these areas and promote economic development, heralding a new stage in China's great leap forward.
