Adelante showcases an Irish Catholic church on the outskirts of Philadelphia that is attracting the patronage of Mexican immigrants in the area. With a personal glimpse at the lives of the vibrant community members - a remarkable Irish American priest, young Mexican immigrants, and older Irish parishioners - the film shows how churchgoers from various backgrounds have forged meaningful and heartfelt bonds of friendship and understanding. Once moribund, the church has become a place for American parishioners to learn about, accept, and embrace a group of immigrants that breathes new life into the community. The film shares the expectant joy of the newly arrived families as they establish lives in an unfamiliar, often bewildering country that offers opportunities entangled with sometimes painful compromises. At its core, Adelante is a celebration of two groups' growth and an embrace of their evolving community.

The Amish do not generally permit photography because of their interpretation of the biblical commandment against the making of graven images. This film is an exclusive portrait of a rarely-filmed religious community that separates itself from the world. Photographed over four seasons, the film captures the day-to-day life of a people who have preserved their rural traditions. Rather than use a narrator to comment on this unusual lifestyle, the Amish speak for themselves. Stirring Amish hymns, composed in the 1500's and handed down orally, complete the soundtrack. This fascinating film on the Amish in Pennsylvania shows a dynamic people, who, contrary to popular belief, are not relics frozen in time. Through gentle modification of their rules they are able to prosper in commercial enterprises. While they shun modern conveniences that may pull the community apart, they are permitted to use them in their businesses. The romantic image of the Amish on horse drawn carriages is only part of the story. In reality they are allowed to use trucks and taxis in their work, as long as they don't own vehicles or drive themselves. Telephones can be used for business communications but not for social calls. Even electricity can be brought into workshops. We meet an Amish family and learn from them how they conduct their daily life. Sociologist Dr. Donald Kraybill explains the origins of their customs, giving the rationale behind their rejection of the modern world. He speculates on the prospects for their cultural survival in the twenty-first century. The war in El Salvador was the most cruel and bloody Latin America has ever seen. During that time of turmoil Latin American bishops created the famous preferential option for the poor, demanding justice, food and education in the name of the gospel. As campesinos, students, and reformists defied the military government, the Jesuits, as spokesmen of the poor, were ordered to leave the country. The Jesuits refused to leave, and many clergy were murdered. Using interviews and old footage, the film follows the civil war and the role of the Church in it. In 1977, after the murder of Father Rutilio Grande, the Archbishop Oscar Romero took a strong anti government position, broadcasting sermons over Radio Luz demanding that the government stop the repression. He could not understand why he was thought to be a follower of Karl Marx, when he knew "he followed only Jesus Christ." Father Romero was killed by a single shot while delivering a sermon. Today, he is looked upon as a saint in El Salvador. An inspiring film about people of faith who stood up against injustice. College Adult

The Holy Warriors examines the reasons for more radical interpretations of the Quran in Algeria, Egypt, Palestine, Jordan, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Analysis of the jihad helps Westerners perceive why some Muslims believe that they can escape Westernization only through violence, how one man's terrorism may be another man's patriotism. How then can differing cultures find a common basis for mutual respect? High School College Adult

In all corners of the world, civil wars have been a fact of modern history. But what happens when the fighting stops, if for years neighbor has been killing neighbor? How do people on both sides deal with the legacy of loss, anger, pain, distrust and a desire for revenge? On the island of Bougainville in Papua New Guinea thousands of people were killed in a war of secession that grew from a local uprising against an Australian copper company. When the ten-year-old civil war ended in 1998, the islanders had to deal with the challenging emotional terrain of personal reconciliation. Breaking Bows and Arrows documents the islanders’ road to forgiveness and healing, a process governed by their own cultural tradition. Perpetrators and victims came together in ceremonies to heal the wounds of division. In one of the largest gatherings, ex-fighters join with the families of those they have killed to participate in traditional peacemaking rituals. One man retrieves the bones of a chief he had shot, ceremonially returning then to the bereaved wife. He seeks a release from this heavy burden of guilt and remorse; she seeks a release from the hatred she feels. College Adult

In 1939, Yiddish was the spoken language of three-quarters of the world's Jews. But when leading Jewish scholars convened in 1980, they estimated that only 70,000 Yiddish books remained in the world. This engaging, often funny documentary film chronicles the adventures of an enterprising 23-year-old named Aaron Lansky, who rallied together an international network of volunteers and set out to rescue the world's Yiddish books. Twenty year later, the National Yiddish Book Center had collected 1.5 million Yiddish books and helped save a rich, diverse, and surprisingly modern literature from oblivion. With rare archival images, and a lyrical portrayal of the National Yiddish Book Center's warehouse and cultural complex, A Bridge of Books celebrates a pursuit that has become a powerful vehicle for the transmission of history, culture and identity across several generations. An inspiring reminder of the role that libraries play in preserving cultures. College Adult
