Dedicated to providing health care for the world’s most vulnerable populations to combat the global spread of infectious disease, Partners In Health is actively involved in finding community solutions to the current pandemic. This live event provided an opportunity for deeper awareness of how socio-economic inequality results in health and medical inequities, contributing to the spread of disease among the resource-poor populations. Those who attended left empowered to look at these issues in their own communities and inspired to develop strategies to advocate for our most vulnerable neighbors. Moderated by Tabitha Jackson, Director of the Sundance Film Festival, the panel discussion included social justice warriors Dr. Paul Farmer, Dr. Jim Kim, and Ophelia Dahl, the founders of Partners In Health.

In recent years DNA testing has increasingly been used by immigration authorities to facilitate family reunifications and to verify the family relations of applicants. This has affected immigration procedures and the understanding of the concept of family. As TORSTEN HEINEMANN explains in this video, the researchers investigated how DNA testing is introduced into the immigration process and the implications this has for the parties involved. By comparing the procedures in different EU countries and by interviewing everyone concerned in the process, the researchers found that several double standards are at work. These concern the alleged voluntariness to agree to a DNA test in the first place, the limitation of a purely biological understanding of the idea of family, and the right to control one’s own genetic information. The findings indicate best practice recommendations for immigration policy making.

Responding to environmental concerns, many countries are restructuring their electricity supply. In this video, HEINZ WELSCH examines the nature of the relationship between electricity supply structure and citizen well-being. Combining data from the European Social Survey with information on different national electricity supply models, among the study’s findings is the observation that though wind energy is generally associated with improved citizen well-being, negative effects can also be observed, especially in the early years after the construction of a wind farm. Encouraging further work on electricity transmission as well as generation, Welsch’s work provides an important model for how future research can engage with concepts like “wellness” and “well-being”, previously held to be outside of the remit of economic analysis.

By participant observation and qualitative interviews in the Yoga scene the study presented in this interview investigates the characteristics of cosmopolitan spirituality. Findings from behavioral economics on altruism and religious giving are used to shed light on Yoga charity events. They exhibit an innovative mixture of generosity and liberal elements, such as competition, ANNE KOCH explains. Thus the observations challenge the traditional concepts of religion and spirituality, and indicate a key-transformation of cosmopolitan spirituality towards an outward social activism.
