NEWS HIGHLIGHTS OF 1964
The year 1964 was a year of change. A year that saw the rise and fall of national leaders around the world. Once again the strength of democratic processes demonstarted in the United States as Republicans and Democrats fought it out for the Presidency. The loudest voice of all was the quiet American voter. He sent Lyndon Baines Johnson back to the White House with a 16,000,000 plurality over Barry Goldwater.
In BRITAIN, voters there ended 13-year Conservative Party rule. Lord Home resigned and Harold Wilson, Labor Party leader, took over as Prime Minister.
KHRUSHCHEV joined the "outs" but behind the Iron Curtain it's different...he had the red carpet pulled out from under him by his "friends" on the Central Committee.
Death came for some world figures.....
NEHRU, the only Prime Minister India has ever known since independence was accorded a moving tribute by millions of Indians.
Death also claimed the man who has been called the greatest military genius in American history - GENERAL DOUGLAS MacARTHUR.
HERBERT CLARK HOOVER, 31st President, recieved a national tribute as he lay in state in the nation's Capital.
Historical precedent was shattered by POPE PAUL VI as he travelled first to the Holy Land and then to India.
The United States increased its aid to South Vietnam, but political uncertainty there continued to hamper the war against the Vietcong rebels.
A lot of loud-mouthed dames roared along the eastern seaboard. Hurricane Hilda was the loudest of the lot.
ALASKA was shaken by the greatest earthquake ever recorded on the North American Continent.
A bright chapter was in the course of human events, written with the passage of the Civil Rights Bill.
A mighty voice was heard in space as Ranger VII took four thousand pictures of the Moon in man's greatest space achievment.
Finally, 1964 will go down in history as the year of the FAIR--- the New York World's FAIR, the greatest exposition ever staged.

SCIENCE AND DEFENSE.
Major strides in space exploration include the launching of the Tiros weatherman satellites, new communication systems, and the recovery of Discoverer space capsules from orbit. Undersea exploration takes a bathyscaphe to the deepest chasm known to man, the Marianas trench. A milestone in national defense comes when the nuclear sub and guided missile weapons system becomes operational, and the U.S.S. George Washington goes on patrol armed with Polaris rockets and H-bomb warheads.

DISASTERS.
Earthquake wreck a Moroccan resort town, devastate the nation of Chile and send destructive tidal waves racing across the Pacific. Hurricane Donna rips the Caribbean and the Atlantic Coast. Two airliners collide in mid-air and fall on New York City in the worst air disaster in history. New York's largest force is called out to fight the holocaust on the super-carrier Constellation.
PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.
After a gruelling campaign, Senator Kennedy wins the Presidency by one of the narrowest margins in history over his opponent Vice-President Nixon. The youngest President-elect ever will soon assume office from the oldest man ever to occupy the post.......

NEWS REVIEW of 1962
In 1962 world peace was threatened by the most critical period in history since the end of World War Two. Red puppet Castro and the Russians turned Cuba into an Island fortress and when U.S. planes spotted missile installations President Kennedy and the Western Allies stood firm. The Russians removed their planes and missiles in a retreat to Moscow.
The Wall of Shame in Berlin was one year old and despite Red efforts to reinforce the barrier East Berliners still escape to the West.
France was at peace for the first time since 1939 as the 7 1/2 year war ended in Algeria. Leftist Deputy Premier Ben Bella took over and immediately found himself faced with economic chaos.
India found the path to neutralism a hard one in a world torn by strife. Red China invaded the country and the ill-prepared people rallied behind Prime Minister Nehru.
Death came to one of the world's most extraordinary and beloved women - Eleanor Roosevelt. She made the role of First Lady a dynamic one as she walked with the great and humble.
Pope John XXIII made modern Church history as he called an Ecumenical Council and, despite an illness, he presided at its close.
Above all 1 9 6 2 was a year of spectacular space achievements. Colonel JOHN S. GLENN, JR., became the first American to orbit the earth and he was quickly followed by Scott Carpenter and Walter Schirra who made six orbits of the earth. With the successful flight to Venus of the Mariner satellite, the United States was pushing forward with its program to put a man on the moon..
