PRESIDENT SEEKS END TO CIVIL STRIFE:
In a move almost without precedent, President Johnson addresses a joint session of Congress to push a voting rights bill aimed at ending discrimination.
The President referred to the events in Selma, Alabama, as "An American tragedy" and throughout the nation there were marches through the streets of towns and cities.
In New York's Harlem more than 15,000 - half of them white - filed somberly through the streets in quiet, but agonized protest.
It was in memory of the Reverend James J. Reeb who was clubbed to death in Selma.
Meanwhile, in that small, southern town, violence had become a way of life. Dr. Martin Luther King leads several thousand marchers in a demonstration for the registration of Negroes.
DUTCH PRINCESS TO WED COMMONER:
Cupid is wearing the crown at Soestdijk Palace as the Dutch Royal family announces the engagement of Princess Margriet, one of four sisters. She's to wed a commoner, Pieter Van Vollenhove. The romance has the blessing of the Queen (Juliana) and the Dutch people.
CONSTANCE BENNETT BACK IN MOVIES:
On one of the sets built for the movie "MADAME X", there's a party of Hollywood notables on hand to welcome home Constance Bennett. After a 12-year retirement, the former movie queen is making a comeback in the screen classic. Hundreds of Hollywood luminaries turn out to bid her welcome and extend their best wishes for the success in her role in "MADAME X".

MARCH OF EVENTS in CONGO CRISIS:
As United Nations forces take up positions across the vast reaches of the Congo and the center of crisis shifts to rebellious Katanga province, Belgium gives a heroic welcome to the first contingents of paratroops to return. King Baudouin greets the paras at the airport, and the city hails them as they parade through.
COAST-TO-COAST VIA MOON:
In a preview of space-age global communications, scientists make a long distance telephone call from New Jersey to California by bouncing the voice signals off the moon. It's the forerunner of a similar system that will use a network of artificial satellites.
HERBERT HOOVER HONORED:
Aboard the ship named for him, former President Hoover is honored by San Francisco's business leaders just before his 86th birthday. Among those present are Senator Knowland and Fleet Admiral Nimitz.
Fashion Parade:
Italy's stylists continue their all-out campaign to launch a new look for 1961, parading an array of hats and head-pieces which indicate they'll do anything to be different.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
WILL ROGERS and WILEY POST are shown as they begin their flight to the Arctic which was to end in tragic death.
MUSSOLINI and KING VICTOR EMMANUEL review half a million troops in Alpine maneuvers.
PRINCE UMBERTO bids farewell to Fascist legions embarking for East Africa and the ETHIOPIAN WAR.
A royal garden party shows the BRITISH ROYAL FAMILY, 25 years ago - KING GEORGE V and QUEEN MARY, the little PRINCESS ELIZABETH, now the Queen, her father, later KING GEORGE VI, the Prince of Wales, to be KING EDWARD VIII and after his abdication the DUKE OF WINDSOR.
In California, a super-fast new plane is unveiled by HOWARD HUGHES.

SATO
Japanese Premier Sato visits with South Vietnamese Premier Ky in a brief goodwill stop, part of his southeast Asian tour which prompted a Tokyo riot. Sato refrains from criticizing the North Vietnamese but says Hanoi should accept U.S. peace offers.
NEW EXTINGUISHER
The Navy's answer to recent tragic fires aboard aircraft carriers: "Purple K." It's a new liquid-extinguisher which douses 150 gallons of flaming fuel spread over 600 feet, using just one man and 25 seconds.
VENUS PROBE
Mariner 5, our Venus probe space-vehicle, sweeps by the planet and sends back data differing from Soviet findings. Future data will check out radioactivity and whether man can land safely on Venus.
FIRE-WALKING
Chinese religious pilgrims gather in Malaysia for their annual fire-walking ceremony. It's an 85-year-old custom and the giant "hot-foot" attracts pain-defying mediums and penitents.
WINDSHIELD
An inflatable windshield goes on display in Paris. Perfect for a temporary replacement while on the road, remove the smashed glass, blow it up, and tape it on!
FOOTBALL
Tennessee ends Alabama's two-year, 25-game unbeaten streak, defeating the Crimson Tide 24-13. Third-string Vol quarterback Bubba Wyche leads his squad, whose defense and interceptions help mould the big victory.

He describes Congress as being “in awe” of the president at the time of the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution but that awe fading within the next two years as constituents expressed dissatisfaction. He recounts being critical of the anti-war movement, being of the opinion that it undermined the war effort, including protests at the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago. Flynt describes his 1971 decision to turn against the war, saying it was the hardest decision of his life.

Lucien Conein was an OSS officer in Vietnam in the early 1960s. He recalls the events leading up to the coup d’etat on November, 1963, which resulted in the overthrow of Ngo Dinh Diem’s government. Conein reported plans of the coup to Ambassador Lodge and recalls the US government made it clear to the planners, ahead of time, that the US would neither support nor thwart Diem’s overthrow.

William E. Le Gro was a colonel in Vietnam and author of "Vietnam from Cease-Fire to Capitulation." Le Gro reports that he felt the Paris Peace Accord was doomed from the start, at least in terms of maintaining a cease fire, but that its purpose for the United States—to disengage the US from Vietnam and to ensure the return of American prisoners of war—was a success. Le Gro says the United States did not back up its Paris promises to assist South Vietnam in the event of an incursion by the North. Despite the indication of its bombing of Cambodia, the US did not promise military action in good faith. He cites the US drawdown in materiel support to Vietnam as a cause of the South’s fall but disputes the role corruption among officials played, dismissing it as an easy excuse some Americans used to hasten disengagement. He reports on the remarkable buildup of North Vietnamese capability inside the South during the mid-1970s. He describes the fall of Ban Me Thuot but contradicts the reports out of Washington that the South Vietnamese had simply stopped fighting. He provides an account of the evacuation from Saigon of American military personnel and their South Vietnamese staffers. And he expresses a feeling of deep betrayal that the United States government did not keep the promises made in Paris.
