A breath-taking collection of ecclesiastical art is assembled at France's Museum of Decorative Arts. More than 500 of the nation's towns and villages contribute to the first show of its kind since 1900. It took 15 years of work to prepare for the exhibit - probably the last of its kind.

The Providence basketball team, with a string of 19 victories dating back to last season, goes down to defeat in the hands of Villanova. It's nip and tuck in the first half, then the Wildcats edge into the lead. The Providence Friars go down fighting as Villanova winds up on top, 71 to 57.

Record rainfall brings floods, death, and destruction to the resort city of Rio de Janiero. 224 persons are killed and three thousand left homeless as roads become rivers, apartment buildings collapse, and hillsides slide down from the heights onto city streets.
INDIA VOTES
India conducts general elections and the future of the ruling Congress Party and its leader, Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi is at stake. 251 million voters cast ballots over six days and first returns indicate serious setbacks for the Congress party.
EJECTION SEAT
The British demonstrate their jet ejection seat aboard a carrier off Plymouth, England. West Germany wants to replace seats in their American-made Starfighter jets with the British model. Reason: loss of forty pilots in sixty-five Starfighter crashes.

The 17th Annual Cyclo-Cross Championship race is held at Zurich, Switzerland. This rare sport combines cycle racing and cross-country running, while carrying the bike! The fifteen-mile distance is covered swiftly by winner Renato Longo of Italy.
TOBOGGANING CHAMPIONSHIP
The World Tobogganing Championship at Hammerstrand, Sweden, brings out the top luge sledders of Europe. Harold Elder represents the United States. Thomas Koehler, East Germany's Olympic Champ is the winner with a total time of 232-3/4 seconds on four runs.

The White House continues to explore all angles to end the Viet Nam war. Ambassador-at-large Averell Harriman reports to the President and Dean Rusk on private talks he had in Moscow with Soviet leaders. Mr. Harriman held out little hope for peace from that source.
The President takes time out to greet nearly 10,000 college students on the White House lawn. He hails the students, working in Washington during the summer, as "fellow revolutionaries" and says: "He, too, is impatient with the present."
NEW FIREFIGHTER TESTED:
The Air Force has developed a new fire truck that is capable of smothering fire in a burning plane within ten seconds after it arrives at the scene. One of its turret jets throws a thousand gallons of water foam from 230 feet away.
DEEP-DIVING SUB A SUCCESS:
With the mysterious ocean depths remaining as one of man's last unexplored frontiers, new research vessels are being developed. The Navy's "Alvin" is one of these and it makes a maiden dive 6,000 feet down off the coast of the Bahamas.

VOLCANO
Minor eruptions from the Taal Volcano, south of Manila, put authorities and residents on the alert. Two years ago, 190 were killed in a major eruption of the usually sleepy volcano.
ARMS RAID
Four New York men are arrested and charged with a bomb attempt on the life of Secretary of the U.S. Communist Party. An incredible arsenal of arms and ammunition is also seized in a series of raids.
VIETNAM
U.S. Air Force fighter-bombers hit harbor and river installations and bomb Hanoi's surburbs for four consecutive days. On the ground, U.S. paratroops fight their way out of an ambush near a small village, while taking several casualties.
SILVER DOLLARS
Silver Dollars, some never circulated, are traded at New York's Mercantile Exchange. Bags of 1,000 bring as much as $2,500. A world shortage and dwindling U.S. supply keeps the price up.
FOREST FIRES
Five states and British Columbia lose a total of 85,000 acres of brush and timber land to quickly-spreading forest fires. A record hot-dry spell and careless campers share the blame.
WATER SKIIERS
Five young ladies from Saint Petersburg, Florida, make a brief stop in New York on their water-ski trip from Florida to Montreal for "Expo '67." It's a 2,500-mile, 25-day trip!
MOTORCYCLES
The World Motocross Championship is held in Czechoslovakia with riders from 14 countries battleing for the grand prize. Hallman of Sweden wins it and Sweden also takes the team prize.
