Ann Arbor has never been a typical college town, typical industrial town, or typical agricultural center. The city was founded in 1824 by John Allen and Elisha Rumsey. Settlers from the Eastern U.S. of British origin were soon followed by Germans, who brought with them many practical skills. With the opening of the University of Michigan campus in 1841, still more people came from across the country to teach and learn. Ann Arbor in the 19th Century: A Photographic History, details the growth of the city, when residents built houses and businesses, organized a government, and established churches, schools, a university, and newspapers, in over 190 photographs. Early residents would recognize the photograph of Okemos, nephew of Pontiac, Chief of the Ottawa, who made regular visits to Ann Arbor, before the Native Americans were banished to Kansas by the federal government. Another fascinating photo shows Henry Otto's Band, whose family was responsible for much of the music at official events. However, much of 19th century Ann Arbor would still be recognizable to today's residents.

Situated within northeastern Utah’s mountainous Uinta Basin, the Ashley Valley takes its name from William Ashley, a trapper who passed through the area in 1825. Both beautiful and rugged, the Ashley Valley’s landscape required a lot of grit from its first settlers. An early expedition party sent out by territorial governor Brigham Young called the area unfit for settlement. This delayed permanent American settlement until 1876, when a few hardy families formed communities in the area, including Ashley, Vernal, Maeser, Dry Fork, Glines, Naples, Davis, and Jensen. The valley was rich in minerals and oil and saw its share of boom-and-bust cycles, as miners and oil-workers struck out to find fortune and left facing government regulations. The Ashley Valley pioneers were a stalwart, hardworking mix of settlers, farmers, miners, and other hardy folk who left a rich legacy. Today, as visitors come over the valley hill, they will encounter a community with a developing oil and gas industry, modern growth, and traditional small-town appeal.

Located on Puget Sound between Seattle and Tacoma, the site that became Federal Way was first settled by loggers, who in the 1860s began using the shore along Puget Sound for easy access to the extensive timber available inland. By the 1880s, about 50 homesteaders had filed claims in the Greater Federal Way area. Five small communities with individual school districts were established. When the five school districts consolidated in 1929, the new school was given the name Federal Way School because of the recently built, federally funded highway that passed nearby. Eventually the entire community came to be known as Federal Way. Still a relatively rural place up until the 1950s, Federal Way has grown exponentially since that time and is now the eighth largest city in Washington.

Skilled craftsmen from the mills were able to live among doctors and lawyers as well as businessmen and supervisors from U.S. Steel. From the boom years of the 1920s through the 1960s, residents of diverse economic backgrounds sent their children to the same schools, prayed together in the same houses of worship, and shopped in Gary’s popular downtown. Gary’s West Side: The Horace Mann Neighborhood is a pictorial history spanning four generations of one of the Steel City’s premier residential districts. Through archival photographs, family snapshots provided by former residents, and shared memories, the reader is taken on a nostalgic journey from the city’s founding in 1906 through to the 21st century.

Kennedy’s ECC rally was part of a marathon daylong blitz that continued statewide through Greensboro and Charlotte. The campaign intended to go as far west as Asheville but due to inclement weather concluded with dinner at the governor’s mansion in Raleigh and a rally at Reynolds Coliseum. With photographs as key primary sources, John F. Kennedy’s North Carolina Campaign explores what happened that day, why it happened, and its significance in North Carolina’s political history. While the book focuses on the East Carolina College rally, which was the first of the day, Kennedy’s subsequent rallies ultimately bore statewide and national significance, making it impossible to examine only one stop without contextualizing it in relation to the remainder.

It sits at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains, yet it is only a half-day's journey from the Atlantic Ocean. This village has always been a place where travelers stopped. Situated on a crossroad of Cherokee trade trails, it became a rest stop for drovers moving their livestock over the mountains. Inns and rest camps developed, and the town of Travelers Rest grew around them. Scots-Irish settled the former Cherokee lands, and patriots were ceded land for Revolutionary War service. In 1887, the new railroad afforded access to factories and markets and improved transportation for tourists. Travelers Rest is proud of its history and eagerly looks forward to a thriving future built on a solid foundation of education, commerce, and community activities.
