30 years ago, China and Taiwan reached an understanding that there’s one China. This set the framework for dialogue and cooperation between both sides of the Taiwan Strait. Fast forward to today, tensions between the two governments are the worst in decades. Taipei has turned its back on the agreement, while Beijing continues to apply military and economic pressure to assert its sovereignty over the territory. The superpower has even vowed to pursue reunification at all costs, by force if necessary. And over in Taiwan, civilians pick up lessens on defence, businesses engage in activities to promote cross-strait economic cooperation and there are even attempts to use semiconductors as bargaining chips against war.

A fight broke out in Mishimishimabowei-teri on the second day of Chagnon and Asch's stay in this village in 1971. The conflict developed between the villagers of Mishimishimabowei-teri and their visitors from another village. The visitors had formerly been part of Mishimishimabowei-teri, and many still had ties with members of that village. They refused to work in their hosts' gardens, yet they demanded to be fed. The event lasted about half an hour, ten minutes of which were filmed. The film is constructed of four parts. The first consists of an unedited version of what the cameraman saw and the sound technician recorded. The apparent chaos of these first ten minutes is clarified in the second section, in which Chagnon explains the sequence of actions, the relationships between the actors, and how the filmmakers' interpretation of the events became coherent. The third section diagrams the lineages in the villages involved to illustrate the fight's relationship to long-standing patterns of conflict and alliance within the village. Finally, in an edited version of the fight, we see how the editors' hands shape the "reality" we view. The Ax Fight thus operates on several levels. It plunges the viewer into the problems of Yanomamo kinship, alliance, and village fission; of violence and conflict resolution. At the same time it raises questions about how anthropologists and filmmakers translate their experience into meaningful words and coherent, moving images.

This film deals with the issue of mandatory military service in Switzerland. For four months, from February to May 1990, filmmaker Jacqueline Veuve and her team filmed a platoon engaged in basic training at Colombier, Switzerland. Having previously filmed recruitment, Veuve was now allowed to document exercises, inspections and rest breaks. Although she interviewed the entire platoon on several occasions, the film focusses on five recruits from different parts of French-speaking Switzerland, each with a different background and a unique opinion on serving in the military. Time is also spent on the superior officers; the Colonel, the Major, the platoon-leader, and a Corporal. The recruits' remarks underline problems concerning not only the army, but life in general, including unemployment, drugs and the many changes going on in the world today.

Is the West determined to impose its value system on Islamic nations without regard to national preferences, thus radicalizing local patriots? Are all Western motives self-serving? This film presents the conflict that has arisen between the local, landholding Kanbi farmers and the Bharvad in Dhrangadhra, western India. Bharvad cattle herdsmen have been nomadic pastorlalists for centuries. This film presents the conflict that has arisen between the local, landholding Kanbi farmers and the Bharvad in Dhrangadhra, western India. They are in the midst of a particularly dry season and competition for the available land and water resources has escalated producing a state of tension between the farmers and the herdsmen. The farmers appear to be supported by the government while the Bharvad are tolerated as a quaint but relatively unimportant political entity. The history of the relationship between the farmers and the pastoralists is reviewed in depth and both points of view are represented. This film clearly demonstrates the influences that geography, natural resources and governmental policies have on the survival of particular ethnic groups and cultures.

This powerful and universally–acclaimed documentary explores the revolutionary movement fighting for democracy in Burma and depicts how young people, in particular, are affected by the human rights abuses of Burma's dictatorial military government. The State Law and Order Restoration Council forcibly overthrew Burma's free 1990 election, when the Burmese people voted overwhelmingly for the National League of Democracy, the party of nonviolence advocate and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. Burma Diary focuses on the story of Tint Aung, a young Burmese man who was actively involved in the protest movement while in college. He is forced to flee from his home and take refuge in the jungles of the Burmese-Thailand border along with his wife and his two young daughters. As the film chronicles four harsh years of Tint Aung's struggle to survive, it provides a passionate and at times heartbreaking study of the hopes of and the obstacles facing the Burmese democracy movement.

For a number of years the American intelligence agency CIA has secretly been using Greenland as a stop over in order to get their planes to Europe and further on to the Middle East. The planes are under suspicion of being part of the CIA's so-called "extraordinary rendition" programme – a secret operation which illegally abducts terrorist suspects from European territory. Oppositions in a number of European countries have demanded independent investigations to find out if the CIA has been using national airspace or airports in connection with the secret prisoner programme. But most of the European governments have refused to investigate the matters so far.
