A caption on the back written in French by Raphael Brudo is headed 'Fishing for pearls,' and notes that the canoes are following the wake of another, named boat, unseen.

A black-and-white photo sent to Malinowski shows a Western-style motor vessel with a man in European dress standing on the fore-deck, accompanied by several Trobriand canoes crewed by a total of more than 20 men, out on the open water. A caption on the back written in French by Raphael Brudo is headed 'Fishing for pearls,' and notes that the men -- whom he refers to with the English word 'boys' -- are from his local village of Kavataria.
