Despite the locals' resistance they marry, and Jan returns to the drill platform, while Bess counts the days until he comes back home. She is sure that their love is blessed from above, especially because she is convinced that she can communicate with God on the mental level. When Jan is paralyzed after an accident, he fears that Bess will cut herself off from a normal life. When he is confined to the bed, he convinces her that he will recover quickly if she finds a lover and tells him about their sexual acts.

Erik Nietzsche is an intelligent but in many ways inexperienced shy young man who is convinced that he must be a film director. In the late 1970s, Erik became admitted to The Danish Film School, where he enters a world full of angry and unhelpful teachers, strange fellow students and unwritten rules. In this both exhilarating and angst-provoking period for him, Erik feels increasingly like a foreigner in the film industry. Frequently he is just an observer of the absurdities around him. He participates in trade union meetings, falls in love and experiences self-assured empowered women who refuse to make a commitment. The film is a drama full of comedy - a sharp portrait of a conceited but entertaining world of film which we suspect our dogged young director will eventually conquer with his vision.
