Erik Nietzsche is an intelligent but in many ways inexperienced shy young man who is convinced that he must be a film director. In the late 1970s, Erik became admitted to The Danish Film School, where he enters a world full of angry and unhelpful teachers, strange fellow students and unwritten rules. In this both exhilarating and angst-provoking period for him, Erik feels increasingly like a foreigner in the film industry. Frequently he is just an observer of the absurdities around him. He participates in trade union meetings, falls in love and experiences self-assured empowered women who refuse to make a commitment. The film is a drama full of comedy - a sharp portrait of a conceited but entertaining world of film which we suspect our dogged young director will eventually conquer with his vision.

A group of young people have come together on a project: to find their inner idiot. They and their mates appear as "idiots" when they go out, and they enjoy life together in Stoffer's uncle's large villa in Søllerød. They challenge each other and the community every day with their idiot-play. At the end of the film comes the ultimate challenge: they must dare to be idiots when they are with their loved ones. But this challenge is so great that it will also become the collective final - but only after we find out that one of the girls is carrying a secret that might have driven her inner idiot.
