This landmark docu-drama re-examines the darkest hours of one of the 20th century's most remarkable heroes, combining fascinating re-evaluation of the epic and traumatic experiences of Winston Churchill in the First World War, and his contributions as Britain's greatest warlord. Disgraced by disasters in the Gallipoli wars, and with his political reputation in tatters, Churchill was all but `finished'. He was also tormented, for he knew that he was one of the very few political leaders opposed to the dreadful one note strategy of endless attrition in Flanders which was `chewing up a whole generation on barbed wire'. His invention of the tank and promotion of air power stemmed from his determination to find another strategy. Illustrating the extraordinary correspondence Churchill sent from the trenches to his wife Clementine, revealing intimate insights into his personal life, as well as life on the front, and with testimony from leading historians and military experts, this is the story of his fall – and his road to redemption.

During World War Two, thousands of black volunteers from the Caribbean joined the fight against Nazi Germany. Their contribution to the war effort is often overlooked. They risked their lives for King and Empire and in the process they became more determined than ever to fight for racial equality. The presence of black servicemen and women in Britain was the beginning of Britain’s multicultural society as it stands today. Their experiences of life in Britain also changed life in the colonies, with far-reaching repercussions. Returning servicemen began to test the long-established ideas of imperial rule in an effort to secure independence for their countries. In this compelling and insightful film, veterans tell their vivid wartime stories and describe their experiences in Britain of the 1940s and afterwards.

Always strike first and always take revenge. Genghis Khan learnt these lessons the hard way during a violent childhood. Son of a murdered father, Genghis grew up in the unforgiving environment of the Mongolian Steppe. But how did an outcast, raised in poverty, come to be the great Khan? Combining live-action footage shot in Mongolia with CGI software used in Lord of the Rings, the recreation of battle scenes is taken to a new level in presenting the story of how Genghis conquered an empire greater than the Roman Empire at its peak. From the ferocious battle for Beijing to the jealous betrayal by his blood brother, Jamuka, Genghis always demanded victory. Almost 700 years after his death, World War II generals were still using his battle plans. But a dark, almost evil, reputation also exists. He is often portrayed as a psychopath who killed his brother and ordered the death of his best friend. Is it accurate to remember Genghis as a merciless, brutal butcher? Let the historical facts presented in this definitive film help you decide.

Description
Documentary about the dark side of the gladiator's life in Roman times. Wild animals, enemies of the state and Christians were pitted against professional fighters to symbolically prove Rome's superiority over the rest of the world. The show reveals that while Romans certainly thought little of the lives of their gladiator-slaves, many fights didn't end in death. If both participants fought bravely, the crowd would often spare his life.

Dr Janina Ramirez unlocks the secrets of medieval illuminated manuscripts and shows how they gave power to the king and united the kingdom in an age of plague, warfare and rebellion. She discovers that Edward III used the manuscripts he read as a boy to prepare him for his great victory at the battle of Crecy and reveals how a vigorous new national identity bloomed during the 100 Years War with France (1340-1453).
In the British Library's Royal Manuscripts collection she finds out that magnificent manuscripts like the Bedford Hours, taken as war booty from the French royal family, were adapted for the education of English princes. Dr Ramirez also explores how knowledge spread through a new form of book - the encyclopedia.
