Undoubtedly one of the most remarkable men who ever lived Aristotle was so industrious in so many fields of science and philosophy that he can be daunting to approach. Film maker Malcolm Hossick here presents him as a warm human being like the rest of us but also someone of remarkable integrity - totally committed to getting at the truth of things and making sense of our lives on earth. Without Aristotle it's difficult to see how we would have got to the level of human development we have. In the complex world of today knowing something more of him can only help each individual to live out a fruitful life. The film covers such details of his everyday life as we have and sets him into the remarkable times in which he lived. When Aristotle arrived in Athens in 383 bc the democracy established there for over eighty years had already been driven out. But the philosopher Plato was there with his Academy and the new views on human life and the rights of the individual were still in place and the astounding evidence of the effect of the democracy in the arts was all around. Staggeringly beautiful buildings, statuary, paintings were everywhere. The new playwrights were thrilling their audiences in the theatres. It was an amazing time to be alive and Aristotle's astonishing talents helped him to make sense of it all and lay the groundwork for all who have followed in his wake trying to understand the remarkable world in which we humans find ourselves. Philosophy in its essence has to be expressed in terms we can all of us grasp – otherwise its not much use: here we turn over some of the essential elements of the matters that concerned Aristotle most of all - human behaviour - and the responsibilities towards society we all carry. It's a gripping and fascinating tale and the film makes quite clear why Aristotle made such a mark in his own day and speaks so powerfully to our own times.

From the art of absolute power in the 18th century through to the modern philosophies bound up in impressionism, art and history are merged to enlightening effect. Presenter Andrew Graham-Dixon unlocks the connection between the unification of France and the art of absolute power (reflected in the Palace of the Versailles) and the cult of personality and the French Revolution. The series concludes with impressionism (Picasso, Corbusier, Sartre), an artistic movement which emerged at a time when France was struggling to decide which way to turn.
Art historian and critic Andrew Graham-Dixon opens this series with the dramatic story of French art, a story of the most powerful kings ever to rule in Europe with their glittering palaces and astounding art to go in them. He also reveals how art emerged from a struggle between tradition and revolution, between rulers and a people who didn't always want to be ruled.
Starting with the first great revolution in art, the invention of Gothic architecture, he traces its development up until the arrival of classicism and the Age of Enlightenment - and the very eve of the revolution. Along the way some of the greatest art the world has ever seen was born, including the paintings of Poussin, Watteau and Chardin, the decadent rococo delights of Boucher and the great history paintings of Charles le Brun.

In the second episode, Andrew Graham-Dixon explores how art in France took a dramatic turn following the French Revolution that ushered in a bold new world. From the execution of King Louis XVI and the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte - a figure who simultaneously repelled and inspired artists of his time - through to the rise of Romanticism and an art of seduction, sex and high drama, Andrew explores artists including Jacques-Louis David - whose art appeared on the barricades and in the streets - as well as the work of Delacroix, Ingres and the tragic but brilliant Theodore Gericault.

When WWII broke out in Holland, she was recruited by the Dutch resistance to “liquidate” Nazis. Joined by her younger sister Freddie Oversteegen and a young Hannie Schaft, the trio used their girlish charms to flirt with nazis and lure them to their deaths. While Truus and her sister evaded Nazi suspicion, their comrade Hannie Schaft was captured and killed shortly before the war ended. With the war over but the trauma lingering, Truus turned to art as an outlet for her pain, creating a bronze sculpture in honor of her deceased friend. Watch as muralist Evelyn Leigh Dastmalchian pays homage to her personal hero.
