A very good study about the pirate fishing of toothfish and its impact on the fishing industry and the environment; it provides a very broad picture of the industry and related environmental issues by combining interviews with world experts on the fish, South African observers, a Greenpeace team, conservation experts and Maritime legal experts.' -EMRO Review
This eye-opening documentary illustrates the difficulties in controlling international fishing, as world fish stocks show signs of depletion. The Patagonia toothfish is becoming so valuable it is known as 'White Gold' and has caused an explosion in fishing. The value of this oily, white fish lies in its desirability as a delicacy in restaurants throughout the East and the United States; it is four times the price of regular white fish. This explains why people take the risk of fishing for it illegally. South Africa is one of the countries trying to end unlawful fishing in their waters, but it is 'like looking for a needle in a haystack.' Environmental groups are concerned that over-fishing will place the toothfish at risk of extinction.

In 1980, the Communist Government of China instituted a policy of one child per family as a means of curtailing population growth. Now, the success or failure of this highly controversial social experiment can be assessed. In this comprehensive report, correspondent John Taylor journeyed from the high rise flats of middle class Beijing to the poor farms of the Chinese countryside to see the effect of this policy. Population growth has been slowed, but this success has come at enormous social cost. Many families have suffered greatly under the policy, from forced abortions to political coercion and heavy fines. Liu Shuling, a poor farmer's wife with two children says: "After having one baby, when people tried to have a second one, if you didn't have money, they would pull down your house. If they didn't pull down your house, they would take away your timber and your horse carts." The policy has also given birth to an alarming imbalance between the sexes. For every 100 girls there are 120 boys. Traditionally, Chinese parents have preferred sons - because they support them in their old age and carry on the family name. Many couples have turned to ultrasound machines to guarantee they get the type of child they desire. Hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of female foetuses have been aborted. China is also becoming a nation of children without siblings. There is now a real concern that the One Child Policy has created a generation of spoilt children - so-called "little emperors and empresses." College Adult

Now Kim says that he has nuclear weapons - and that he's prepared to sell them to whoever will pay his price. George Bush put North Korea on the 'Axis of Evil' shortlist, but is Kim really plotting to destroy the planet or is the nickname 'Dr Evil' indicative of nothing more than a battle of words in the Cold War's last frontier? Correspondent charts Kim's progress from lazy student through terrorist mastermind to tough-talking nuclear brinksman.
