Vincent Paterson’s camera and imagination have given Anna Netrebko the scope to embrace five totally different characters within about an hour’s screen time. Revealing her true personality through an extensive and intimate interview on childhood, education, career and private matters, she then convinces the viewer as a gifted performer in her portrayals of Mozart’s Donna Anna, Bellini’s Amina, Gounod’s Marguerite, Dvorák’s Rusalka, and Puccini’s Musetta. The visual language of this portrait reflects a contemporary approach of introducing one of the most exceptional sopranos of our time to a wider audience.

“He is probably the greatest musician of our time. There’s no doubt about it.” – Zubin Mehta on Daniel BarenboimOn the occasion of the anniversary of Daniel Barenboim, one of the most renowned conductors and pianists of our times, an all-embracing portrait of this outstanding musical personality has been created. The documentary accompanies Maestro Barenboim in his eventful working life and at the same time gives a review of Barenboim’s long musical career, from its beginnings to today. Shot in Barenboim’s native town Buenos Aires, in Ramallah and in Berlin, the movie captures rehearsals and performances of the Maestro and his West-Eastern Divan Orchestra at the Teatro Colón and the Staatsoper Berlin. Furthermore, it covers milestone events in Berlin: the opening of the Pierre Boulez Saal – which is part of the Barenboim-Said-Academy and has been brought into being by Daniel Barenboim – and the grand re-opening of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, where Barenboim, in his function as General Music Director, performs together with the Staatskapelle Berlin. In several interviews, long-term companions of the exceptional musician – among them Martha Argerich, Zubin Mehta, Waltraud Meier, his son Michael Barenboim and director Wim Wenders – give a very personal insight into the experiences they shared with Daniel Barenboim throughout the years.

Since 1972 the 12 Cellists of the Berliner Philharmoniker have been a prominent institution in international musical life …Since 1972 the 12 Cellists of the Berliner Philharmoniker have been a prominent institution in international musical life. Whether they’re playing classical music, jazz, tango or avant-garde, listeners around the world are invariably fascinated by the wide range of the unique and intoxicating timbres that these twelve cellos can produce. Their mixture of seriousness and humor, of depth and lightness, appeals to audiences of all ages. Among the contemporary composers who have written works especially for the “12” are Boris Blacher, Jean Françaix, Iannis Xenakis, Arvo Pärt, and Tan Dun. The documentary by Enrique Sánchez Lansch portrays the ensemble of the 12 Cellists, its history and its individual members.
