Filmed in 1966 in mine arenas and villages of South Africa, Malawi and Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), this film captures a series of electrifying traditional, and now largely extinct, dance performances. It captures dramatic traditional presentations and enactments by Zulu, Karanga, Ndau, Xhosa, Valley Tonga, and Barotse, among others. Most importantly, these mine dances were some of the last occasions at which traditional dance could be viewed by the general public. This film is an open window into an irretrievable past. Stamping, shaking and tumbling are some of the styles of Southern African dancing that were showcased at mine dances. For recreation, migrant mine workers from various indigenous tribes would perform dances from their home villages in traditional dress. This practice evolved into an important venue that was open to the public. The writer and narrator of the film, Dr. Hugh Tracey, is one of the principal vanguards of the study of African music and was instrumental in developing the mine dance venues. In several vignettes, his son Dr. Andrew Tracey, offers insights into the nature and aesthetics of African music.

Defiant Requiem illuminates the extraordinary, untold story of the brave acts of resistance by the Jewish prisoners at Terezín during World War II.
It tells the remarkable story of Rafael Schächter, a brilliant young Czech opera-choral conductor who was arrested and sent to Terezín in 1941. His most extraordinary act was to recruit 150 prisoners and teach them the Verdi Requiem by rote in a dank cellar using a smuggled score, after grueling days of forced labor. The Requiem was performed on sixteen occasions for fellow prisoners. The last, most infamous performance occurred on June 23, 1944. With only sixty prisoner-singers remaining following massive deportations, Schächter was ordered by the Nazi camp commander to perform the Requiem before high-ranking SS officers from Berlin and the International Red Cross to support the charade that the prisoners were well treated and flourishing.
Defiant Requiem is about how a rare form of courage, hope, and survival sparked an entirely unique method of fighting Nazi oppression, enabling the prisoners to maintain their dignity and humanity while battling the worst of mankind with the best of mankind. The Latin liturgy of the Requiem which highlights God’s ultimate judgment of the wicked, allowed the prisoners to sing to the Nazis what they dared not say. The Nazi legacy of brutality is well established, but the Terezín legacy is virtually unknown and is told dramatically in Defiant Requiem.

The 7th Symphony, which some directors would rather avoid than perform, is a challenge to Iván Fischer: he wants the audience to experience this eclectic and comprehensive work in which many musical styles come together. He inspires and motivates the members of his orchestra in a lively and vivid way. Melchior Huurdeman followed Iván Fischer (1952) not just in the concert hall. Fischer also took him back to the places of his early childhood. He grew up on the Andrassy Ud, directly opposite the famous opera where Gustav Mahler had worked as artistic director since 1888. From the age of 8, Iván closely followed the opera world, while his own world was immersed in music. His father translated operas into Hungarian. In this special episode, VPRO Free Sounds will also focus on Fischer's compositions of recent years, in which the interbellum period plays an important role.
