A popular fervour enchants this concert given by the Macedonian Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Estonian-born American conductor Kristjian Jarvi and a trio of highly talented popular musicians whose fame seems immense in their own countries: guitarists Vlatko Stefanovski and Miroslav Tadic and on kaval (from the flute family), Theodosii Spassov. The Serbian, Croatian, Romanian, Albanian and Turkish origins of the Macedonian population, which has only been independent since 1991, have rooted the vitality of popular music in spiral dances and tonalities with Middle Eastern and Balkan accents. While most of this repertoire is written by Spassov, some traditional themes can also be discerned and discovered. With scattered singing and kaval, Spassov illuminates the concert with a creativity that would delight the Brazilian Hermeto Pascoal and the French flutist Joce Mienniel. Philippe Lesage
