As the threat of "weapons of mass destruction" looms, this video, made in the late '90s, becomes disturbingly relevant.
The closest the world came to a nuclear war in the twentieth century was the Cuban Missile Crisis which played itself out over 13 days in October, 1962. Remarkably, the behind-the-scenes debates were unobtrusively recorded on tape; these were not de-classified until the late 90s. In this film, we hear on tape President John F. Kennedy and the people around him preparing to confront the Soviet Union in Cuba, in the episode considered the climax of the Cold War.
The tapes demonstrate how Kennedy stood up to relentless pressure to go to war. His own generals, congressmen and friends warned him that "appeasement" could lead to disaster; he must not appear "cowardly." The issue of "pre-emptive strike" was considered. In the film, Robert McNamara, the former U.S. Defense Secretary and Gen. Maxwell Taylor, the former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, urge an attack on Cuba with the goal of destroying the Russian missiles. Opposing them are Attorney General Robert Kennedy and Assistant Secretary of State George Ball, who felt that a surprise air strike would be a terrible political error. Sergei Khrushchev, the son of the Soviet premier, recalls his father¹s shock at learning his military had, without authorization, shot down an American U-2.
For all the calmness displayed on these tapes by the President and his key advisors, we now know that some of their calculations were shockingly mistaken. They had no idea of the dangers the country was really facing. The world was much closer to nuclear war than anyone knew.

Despite of the integration of Croatia in the European Union, the country remains a powder keg.

Walking the Line offers a harrowing view of the chaos, absurdity and senseless deaths of Mexican illegals along the U.S. - Mexico border because some American citizens are taking the law into their own hands. Southern Arizona, a region celebrated for its history of lawlessness, has become the most highly trafficked area for immigrants in the world -- and one of the most dangerous. A shift in the border policy forces migrants to cross the unforgiving desert where thousands die. Those who make it across face volatile, often armed, civilian militias. Standing in opposition to the vigilantes are humanitarians, organized to prevent migrant deaths. Confronting the growing crisis, they too find themselves on the wrong side of the law. A Tucson pastor is indicted on federal felony charges for aiding and abetting while a Native American faces banishment from his reservation for constructing water stations. Following rancher vigilantes with semiautomatic weapons, outlaw pastors with four-wheel drives, and impoverished immigrants armed only with dreams of a better life, the film explores the uncertain line between what is patriotic, what is moral, and what is just. The Battle of the U-Boats explores the battle for naval supremacy. For centuries, the Royal British Navy had battled in southern waters, against her traditional enemies, France and Spain. But, in the first years of the twentieth century, that all changed. The new threat was to the northeast, as Germany built a formidable new navy.
As an arms race began, this engrossing two-parter is told from the perspective of both sides: how Britain maintained her economic blockade of Germany; how the German U-boats took Britain to the brink of surrender; and, in 1917, how German U-boat warfare brought the USA into the war. From the pioneering sailors who plumbed the depths in the first kerosene-fuelled submarines to the advent of the dreadnoughts, World War 1 at Sea offers a unique perspective on the events and experiences that would help decide the outcome of World War One.
The Battle of the U-Boats is the second part of the thought provoking BBC history series World War One at Sea which looks at the dynamic naval battle between two world powers.
