Richard Strauss is one of the most famous and successful composers of the 19th and 20th centuries. He wrote over 250 works, was a gifted conductor, cosmopolitan freethinker and committed to cultural affairs. But he was also a strict family father, a patriarch who rarely tolerated contrary views – a man who planned everything to the last detail, from his domestic life to his musical works, and even the time after his death. Gabriele Strauss is the wife of his grandson Richard and current manager of the Strauss Archiv. Together with filmmaker and archive specialist Barbara Wunderlich, she takes us on a historical journey, uncovering many previously unpublished photos, diaries and letters from the Strauss family archive. The archive is still housed in the villa in Garmisch – built exactly to Strauss's specifications – where he composed most of his musical works. The documentary on the accompanying DVD "Richard Strauss – Skizze eines Lebens” (Richard Strauss – Sketches Of A Life) casts a closer look at the Strauss villa in Garmisch – a place where the spirit of the composer seems to linger so strongly, it's as if he were still alive. The director Marieke Schroeder conducts interviews with family members and contemporaries such as Christian and Gabriele Strauss, Inge Borkh and Brigitte Fassbaender, who provide unique insights into the life, musical works, and the ideas of the great composer. Arthaus Musik is now releasing the exclusive first edition of this fascinating book/film combination, which is an invaluable addition to the collection of new and long-time Strauss fans.

In playful episodes the documentary "Satiesfictions" by Youlian Tabakov and Anne-Kathrin Peitz illuminates the phenomenon that is Satie: His countless ads evolve into real commercials and his drawings into cartoons. Interwoven with accounts by Satie associates and music experts, the film offers a unique insight into Satie's cosmos of word and sound, featuring divas, dogs, and children, pianists playing on pianos stacked atop each other or performers turning into "musical furniture".

In Western classical music, the achievement of Andrés Segovia is unique. As a boy in Granada, he was captivated by the variety of tone colours and the wealth of harmonic possibilities of the Spanish guitar and he saw a future for it that nobody had previously even dreamed of. On those seemingly slender beginnings, he set out on a remarkable quest. Playing the music written by Fernando Sor and Francisco Tarrega in the nineteenth century and adding the compositions of Johann Sebastian Bach, he began to build, not only a career for himself, but to lay the foundations of modern guitar technique and the present-day international popularity of the Spanish guitar as a serious musical instrument, an instrument capable of musical expression at the very highest level. Within twenty years, Andrés Segovia had taught himself the instrument, revolutionised the technique and won acceptance for it on the concert platforms of Europe. He spent the next fifty years giving concerts in almost every part of the world and was at various times a resident of Spain, The United States, Switzerland and Argentina. At the age of 75, he returned to his native Andalusia with his young wife, Emilita, to build a new home, Los Olivos, on the Costa del Sol as close as he could to Granada where he spent his childhood. Segovia at Los Olivos is made in the relaxed atmosphere of his new home and in Jaen and Granada where he spent his formative years. The idea is very simple: to give a great man an opportunity to look back on sixty years of concert life and one of the most astonishing contributions to Western music made by any performing musician in the last hundred years.
