From 121BC onwards, the political fortunes of Rome were dominated by powerful leaders. Marius - the military reformer, Sulla - the dictator, Cicero - the lawyer, orator and consul, and Julius Caesar who appointed himself dictator in 45BC. When the Roman fleet destroyed the Egyptians at the Battle of Actium, Augustus became the first Roman Emperor. The rule of the Julio-Claudia emperors, notably Caligula and Nero, were a disgrace. During the period of the Five Good Emperors - Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius, the Roman Empire was at its greatest. Eventually, Vandals, Goths, Bergundians and Alani invaded and the Empire finally fell in 476AD.

Were the ancient Scottish tribes too much for the Roman Empire? Or was Scotland simply not worth conquering? Archaeologist Dr Fraser Hunter looks back on three centuries of contact and conflict with the Roman invaders. This last episode in the series The Story of India tells how a foreign multinational (the East India Company) thousands of miles away gradually and almost by chance took power over great swathes of the Indian subcontinent; how after the horrendous shock of the 1857 'Mutiny' the British state took over and turned this supremacy into the Raj, the jewel in the crown of the greatest empire the world had ever seen; and how the Freedom Movement delivered Independence to India in 1947, albeit a divided India. The series ends by acknowledging the extraordinary achievements of Indian democracy over sixty years and flags India's predicted rise to be the largest country and the second largest (or even the largest) economy in the world in the next three decades.
