Cubanos draws an impressionist portrait of the international Cuban community, whose identity has been fragmented by 48 years of dictatorship, as it struggles to leave the 20th century behind. Cubanos draws and impressionistic portrait of a Cuban community fragmented by 48 years of dictatorship. Catuey, a Cuban musician now living in Canada, travels with filmmaker Yan Giroux throughout Cuba. Filming illegally, they are unable to show their subjects faces, a formal constraint that becomes an aesthetic symptom of the crumbling landscape of Cuban communism. Catuey revisits a Cuba that is full of music, but also riddled with misery and corruption, where the black market for stolen government rations is one of the only thriving industries. Filmmaker Yan Giroux transforms the chaos of reality into a set of evocative signs, painting a complex portrait of a people held prisoner by their history, and scanning the day-to-day lives of Cubans in Cuba and Miami for vestiges of the revolutionary dream that has been tattered by so much disillusionment. In Miami, the very active Cuban community hangs on to its national identity, but Catuey sees a disconnect between the perceptions of those living in the United States and the realities of their homeland As Cubans on both sides of the straights of Florida struggle to leave the events of the 20th century behind, Cubanos is a road movie that takes us to the heart of their struggle.

Following an abortive coup in 1974, Turkey invaded and occupied the north of the island. 200,000 Greek Cypriots, a third of the population, fled their homes, becoming refugees in the south.
During the Turkish invasion, many died in the war, but their bodies were never recovered. Others (including women and children) vanishe... In spite of various attempts at resolution, including a UN Committee, both sides still guard the unidentified hidden bones of each others' missing persons The film was shot in 2001 when the possibility of DNA identifiication redefined the problem and gave it a new urgency. By following the desperate attempts of two Greek women to discover the fates of their loved ones, the film explores the signficance of mortuary rituals and the different political lives of dead bodies among the Greek and Turkish Cypriots. Opening with the PRD electoral campaign, Cruz meets with the Totonac mayor and council, visits rural projects, talks with his Totonac family and neighbors, with the parish priest, and with the mestizo (non-Indian) mayoral candidate of the opposition PRI. With Cruz, we watch the voting, the vote counting, and the stunning 3:00 a.m. victory celebration. The film concludes with an examination of the strengths and weaknesses of this powerful example of democracy in action.

DEPORTED follows members of a unique group of men in Haiti: criminal deportees from North America. Since 1996, the United States has implemented a policy of repatriation of all foreign residents who have been convicted of crimes. Every two weeks, about 50 Haitian nationals are deported from the United States; 40 percent are convicted legal residents who completed their jail sentence in America. To a lesser extent, Canada applies a similar policy....
DEPORTED follows members of a unique group of men in Haiti: criminal deportees from North America. Since 1996, the United States has implemented a policy of repatriation of all foreign residents who have been convicted of crimes. Every two weeks, about 50 Haitian nationals are deported from the United States; 40 percent are convicted legal residents who completed their jail sentence in America. To a lesser extent, Canada applies a similar policy.Through the portraits and interviews of four deportees in Haiti and their families in North America, DEPORTED presents the tragedy of broken lives, forced separation from American children and spouses, alienation and stigmatization endured in a country they don't know and don't understand. A new life begins for these deportees in an environment that is both completely unfamiliar and quite hostile. Many no longer have family on the island and speak little, if any, Creole. Some struggle with addiction and others are coping with mental illness. Most have very limited financial means with which to manage any sort of reintegration. And Haitians are generally less than welcoming. They know that these North Americans have committed crimes and view them with suspicion.DEPORTED, winner of Best Documentary Award at the Vues D'Afrique International Film Festival, goes far beyond the borders of Haiti and addresses the global issue of migratory policies.
