Clausen notes that this is a very clear recording by talented drummers.
[Clausen made extensive photographs of the building of this shrine, and tells the story of Paul Tualumlum in the photographic documentation. Briefly, Paul Tualumlum was implicated in a minor cargo cult, which Clausen viewed as a proto-nationalist movement largely economic in nature, in that Paul Tualumlum was encouraging the local population to work their own plantations as a cooperative capitalist venture, rather than working for (largely) French plantation owners. He was arrested by the French authorities and died in prison, making him a martyr. This happened shortly before Clausen's arrival. As a gesture of reconciliation, the British and French authorities allowed the construction of the shrine at Wowo, which consisted of Paul's gravesite, a shrine featuring a tall post with a Nimbel (carved hawk figure), a hut for Paul's widow, a 'museum' hut, and new dancing ground and drums. After the completion of the shrine the French authorities refused to allow Paul's remains to be moved from their present location, and the dancing ground was, I believe, never 'consecrated', or at least not for some great while.]

Recorded on Wowo dancing ground, for consecration of new drum, and performed by Dirac visitors from Norsup. "Dirac" translates as "Bush people". They were originally settled on Malekula directly across channel from Atchin, but had been resettled at Norsup [also on Malekula, nearer to Wala].

5) pig presentation. First, chief dances, then pigs are brought by his men and given to him formally. Next, the chief secures the pigs to stones, then redistributes them amonst visiting chiefs. Continued on Side 2.
Side 2:

2) 17:30: hauling new upright slit-drum (Miren) from where it was cut and made, to the dancing ground. The haulers are singing a work chant. After the drum is hauled to the dancing ground, it is left on its side for several days and decorated with flowers, before being raised. The raising of this drum is recorded on 1993.6.116.
3) 21:45: Durei-na-mbwe to try out new Miren [played horizontally].
