We all know the exciting, sweaty, scary, uncomfortable feeling arriving at a border. You will have to submit yourself to the guards standing in front of you. In a split second your mind is alert. “Do I carry any illegal product, are my papers in order, did I take my “special” cigarettes out”, what about the snake skin boots..? Probably everything is in order, you played by the rules, but…Power is not in your own hands at the border. They, the guards will check your papers, they might check your luggage. The guards may want to check your body and maybe even they will want to check the inside of your body. Life is out of your own hands. The film Borders starts at the Schiphol Airport Detention Centre. Its unique filmmaker Jacqueline van Vugt was able to film inside. Here we encounter the border between The Netherlands and Nigeria, by Clara, 16 years in the Netherlands. She is expelled, back to her country of origin, Nigeria. In Nigeria the journey starts a new. Border by border the film Borders follows the route from Nigeria to The Netherland, a route taken by many immigrants. The subsequent Borders are the protagonists; Nigeria-Niger-Burkina Faso-Mali-Senegal-Mauretania-Marocco-Spain-France-Belgium-The Netherlands. The Borders change; the people, the light, the colours, the temperature, the use of technical instrument, …but the influence of power is always there!at The anguish, the scary thrill, will posses you - being there – at the Borders.

Burden of Peace tells the remarkable story of Claudia Paz y Paz, the first woman to lead the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Guatemala. A country that has been ravaged for years by a devastating civil war, in which nearly 200,000 Mayan Indians were systematically massacred, is currently one of the most violent countries in the world. Drug cartels, corruption, rape, and violence rule everyday Guatemalan life, with little repercussions for offenders. As prosecutor, Claudia seeks justice for her nation’s victims, and begins an assault that starts at the top, with government officials. She manages the extraordinary achievement of convicting former dictator Efraín Rios Montt on charges of genocide. Since her first year in office, Claudia bravely gave access to documentary filmmakers, which resulted in an intimate glimpse into the life of a woman who will stop at nothing to break the cycle of violence and seek justice in the name of her nation’s people. Her achievements don’t come without sacrifices, however, and it isn’t long before the government seeks to remove Claudia from office and threatens her life. This intense film shows an unfiltered look at the way those in power will stop at nothing to silence those who threaten their existence. Will Claudia be able to break the cycle of violence and corruption in her country? What will be the burden of the peace she seeks?

In the mid-1970's, Cambodia was the victim of a brutal genocide, when the communist Pol Pot regime exterminated every fifth inhabitant. In less than four years, hundreds of thousands were murdered, and over a million died as a result of starvation and disease. We hear from those who lost their families as well as from former guards who perpetrated the crimes. A guard who beat prisoners claims he was forced to commit torture; the alternative would have been his own murder. He feels terribly guilty now and has confessed to his family. Sorya Sim of the Documentation Centre says "The purpose of documenting is justice and memory." The Centre collects material to prosecute the Khmer Rouge and to educate the younger generation about the events. Recently, a peace treaty paved the way for the first real evaluation of the Pol Pot regime - and perhaps for reconciliation. This process is difficult in a country like Cambodia, where it is seen as "wrong" to talk negatively about the past. The Institute for Social Development organized several peace marches and four reconciliation meetings and at one of these, a number of Khmer Rouge leaders apologized. For many people, and for the media, saying "I am sorry" was not enough. Kassie Neou of Cambodia's Institute for Human Rights, believes the peace marches promote the possibility of "...living together in understanding, and that way people can focus on harmonious ways of living." But many carry mental and physical wounds, too fearful to speak out about the atrocities of that tragic time. High School College Adult

This film exposes the hypocrisy of the Western nations which continue to support Pol Pot, despite the atrocities of his regime. Not only has Pol Pot been allowed to occupy Cambodia's seat in the United Nations, but the Western nations have been secretly selling them weapons for use in their civil war. Few Westerners realize the grave situation of India's "untouchables." There are 150 million of them who live a segregated life. They cannot own land or get an education and are condemned to the most menial jobs, such as sweeping streets, cleaning toilets, or butchering animals. In the villages they are subject to abuse, sometimes killed for minor slights to the landowners. From birth, all alternatives are closed to them. While the government has tried to improve the condition of the untouchables, these attempts have been met by strong resistance. Upper caste Hindus profit from this source of cheap labor. In addition, the Hindu notion that the untouchable is impure is deeply ingrained. However, a few leaders have arisen from their ranks, who work for change. College Adult

Each year hundreds of Tibetan children risk their lives fleeing Tibet in search of a freer life and an education in India. The Tibetan Government has established schools for young refugees throughout India to provide them with a chance to learn about their own culture and religion and to be educated in their own language. Children of Tibet tells the remarkable story of three of these determined children who make the perilous journey across the Himalayas to India. Told in their own words, the children journey in the care of guides who take them by foot in the winter, leaving their families behind. Many others who went before them died in snowstorms in the mountains; others lost toes or feet to frostbite. Upon arriving in India not everything is as easy as the children expected. They do not all fit into the carefully organized school system. The film follows their lives as they prepare to leave the refugee center in Dharamsala and enter the school system. College Adult

When adults fight, children are the losers. They have neither mental nor physical strength to deal with the horrors of war. Finding headless bodies, limps and massacred people leaves scars never to be healed. This is the situation in Afghanistan
War trauma seriously affects the emotional and intellectual development of children ruining their chances of growing up as balanced individuals. A capacity much needed in a country suffering from decades of war. Six million Afghan children are estimated to be steeped in crises. Hundreds of billions of dollars are spent on the war. Compared to these amounts hardly anything is spent on the children. Experience shows that it is easy, cheap and feasible to help the minors and thus reducing the risk of them becoming future aggressors. This documentary pictures Afghan children, their life and background and some of the people deeply involved in helping children victimised by war.
The documentary has been researched since 2003 – shot in 2007 and 2008 in several locations in Afghanistan from Tora Bora to Kabul
