“Angkor Awakens: A Portrait of Cambodia” is an eye-opening snapshot of a nation poised at a political and cultural tipping point. Viewing the present through the lens of the country’s tangled history, the film follows the people of Cambodia as they fight to recover their culture and history in the wake of the Khmer Rouge genocide (1975-1979).Though the legacy of past violence and present-day repression lives on, it is counterbalanced by the hopes and aspirations of Cambodia’s new generation. “Angkor Awakens” is built around intimate interviews— including an unprecedented appearance by Cambodia’s Strongman/Prime Minister Hun Sen. Containing stunning footage of the country, this film provides a window into the lives of one of Asia's youngest populations as it seeks to leave behind its brutal past. The film examines Nixon and Kissinger’s secret bombing of Cambodia which set the stage for the rise of the Khmer Rouge.“Angkor Awakens” is directed by Robert H. Lieberman. He is a bestselling novelist, award winning filmmaker (“They call it Myanmar,” “Last Stop Kew Gardens”), and a long-time member of the Cornell University Physics faculty. It is Lieberman’s background as a child of the Holocaust that has led him to explore the effects of the genocide on today’s young Cambodians. Director's Statement. A personal message from Robert:As a child of the Holocaust, I was initially drawn to Cambodia because I was curious to see if there were any lingering effects of the Khmer Rouge genocide in today’s young people. I was determined not to make a doom and gloom movie. Rather, I wanted to provide a sweeping portrait of the country, its people and history, its politics and psychology. Of course there was no way to avoid Cambodia’s darkest period. I got lucky and got a two-hour, eyeball-to-eyeball interview with Hun Sen, Cambodia’s strongman/prime minister who never gives interviews. Rather than using a crew in Cambodia, I shot the 149 interviews recording the sound by myself and using only available lighting. It allowed people to be comfortable enough to share their most intimate thoughts. My intention is that this be a story of hope and recovery told through the Cambodian people— the young and old, artists and teachers, politicians and just plain ordinary people. Having lived through the Vietnam war, I was forced to come to grips with Nixon and Kissinger’s secret bombing and incursion into this neutral country that helped set the stage for the rise of the Khmer Rouge. It strikes me that in the present political climate the film has an immediacy that makes the story today as relevant as ever. Our production team’s hope is that this film will build on the major success of our previous film “They Call It Myanmar.”

Every few years a new documentary comes along whose impact is so powerful, so illuminating, and so memorable that it is deemed an instant classic and an essential classroom teaching tool. "Anonymously Yours" is such a film. This extraordinary documentary on sex-trafficking in Southeast Asia interweaves four young women's stories to reveal an institution that enslaves as many as 40 million women worldwide. Shot clandestinely in Myanmar (formerly Burma), "Anonymously Yours" is often shocking, frequently harrowing, and always compelling. Through the brutal honesty of the four women's stories the film exposes the commonplace bartering and selling of women and the cycles of poverty that enslave them. From the back rooms of teashops and restaurants to the lounges of five-star hotels, the Far East sex trade thrives on the routine merchandising of girls and women for the sexual escape and pleasure of men from all cultures. Through their unforgettable and poignant testimonies, these four sex workers introduce Western audiences to the widespread corruption and staggering poverty that are the status quo in much of the world -- and the primary causes behind one of the fastest-growing and most vicious industries on earth: the sale of human beings. "Anonymously Yours" will engage and challenge students and provoke animated discussion in a wide range of courses in women's studies, cultural anthropology, Asian studies, human rights, economics, and development issues. It was produced by Gayle Ferraro, who also produced the widely acclaimed documentary, "Sixteen Decisions."

What if your country was swallowed by the sea? The Pacific Island nation of Kiribati (population: 100,000) is one of the most remote places on the planet, seemingly far-removed from the pressures of modern life. Yet it is one of the first countries that must confront the main existential dilemma of our time: imminent annihilation from sea-level rise. While Kiribati’s President Anote Tong races to find a way to protect his nation’s people and maintain their dignity, many Kiribati are already seeking safe harbour overseas. Set against the backdrop of international climate and human rights negotiations, Anote’s struggle to save his nation is intertwined with the extraordinary fate of Tiemeri, a young mother of six, who fights to migrate her family to New Zealand. At stake is the survival of Tiemeri’s family, the Kiribati people, and 4,000 years of Kiribati culture.

The artists, rebels, and bohemians who came to New York's Greenwich Village over many decades changed the face of American culture through their art and politics. This film portrays the important political and social movements that began in the Village: the first interracial jazz club, the earliest Socialist newspapers from before World War I, the Stonewall Rebellion which sparked the Gay Liberation movement and many others. This unique film includes anecdotes from many famous writers, musicians and performers who got their start in the Village. Actor/ director Tim Robbins speaks about growing up in the Village and attending early protest rallies. Allen Ginsberg shows us the coffee house where he first read poetry. Playwright Edward Albee remembers how his controversial plays found a home here. Also appearing in the film are film director Woody Allen, poet Maya Angelou, author Norman Mailer, folk singers Peter, Paul & Mary, Judy Collins, Richie Havens and jazz drummer Roy Haynes -- as well as local Village painters, activists, club owners and drag queens. The Ballad of Greenwich Village interweaves past and present, with 16mm footage, archival photographs, Hollywood movies, cartoons, informative interviews and scenes of contemporary village life. Accompanied by a lively soundtrack that ranges from ragtime to bebop to folk music, the film celebrates what was America's first bohemia. A valuable addition for film collections in American literature and theatre, and urban studies. College Adult

The Warsaw Uprising was the largest and bloodiest military operation undertaken by any resistance movement in World War II. From August 1 - October 2, 1944 the Nazis were challenged by an underground army of irregular volunteers - the vast majority barely adult. The Poles wanted to free their capital and greet the advancing Red Army as a free people. They counted on help from the Allies but this did not come. 200,000 people, one-third of Warsaw's population perished, 15,000 resistance fighters were taken prisoner-of-war, and 80% of Warsaw was destroyed. Battle for Warsaw '44 contains unique testimony from Polish, British, and German participants. Hugh Lunghi, a member of British Military Mission to Moscow, speaks for the first time about the British involvement at the time of the Uprising and pilots from the RAF and Red Army Air Force describe their airlifts to Warsaw. Included is the extraordinary film shot by the Poles themselves who used photo reporters and a special film unit to document the uprising. Today, two decades after the collapse of communism, hundreds of thousands of people gather at the Warsaw military cemetery on August lst to mark the outbreak of the insurrection. The commemoration in Poland was considered an act of defiance during the communist era, which government authorities monitored but dared not stop. Understanding what happened in 1944 helps explain the nature of Polish opposition to communism. High School College Adult

The war in El Salvador was the most cruel and bloody Latin America has ever seen. During that time of turmoil Latin American bishops created the famous preferential option for the poor, demanding justice, food and education in the name of the gospel. As campesinos, students, and reformists defied the military government, the Jesuits, as spokesmen of the poor, were ordered to leave the country. The Jesuits refused to leave, and many clergy were murdered. Using interviews and old footage, the film follows the civil war and the role of the Church in it. In 1977, after the murder of Father Rutilio Grande, the Archbishop Oscar Romero took a strong anti government position, broadcasting sermons over Radio Luz demanding that the government stop the repression. He could not understand why he was thought to be a follower of Karl Marx, when he knew "he followed only Jesus Christ." Father Romero was killed by a single shot while delivering a sermon. Today, he is looked upon as a saint in El Salvador. An inspiring film about people of faith who stood up against injustice. College Adult

While Korea groaned under the harsh colonial rule of Imperial Japan from 1932 until 1945, the Japanese military coerced, tricked, and forced more than 200,000 women of Korea into a brutal and systematic form of sexual slavery on an unimaginable scale. Forbidden to leave the rickety shacks hastily constructed near the front lines of Imperial Japan's aggressive wars, often with a blanket as the room's only "furniture", they were forced to have sex with some 30-40 men every day. Behind Forgotten Eyes presents the stories of a few brave Korean women who have come forward and broken the silence exposing a past that some may want to stay buried. To this day, the Japanese government has yet to formally apologize or pay compensation to these women. Along with the first-hand accounts from Korean women, we hear from Japanese soldiers who used and abused them. With the expert testimony of academics, social activists, and professionals from Japan, Korea, and the United States the film offer a candid look into an issue that has been ignored for far too long. Time is running out for these women and their stories. College Adult

This fast paced and chilling story of the Chernobyl disaster, pieced together from eyewitness accounts and historic film footage, shows a cover up of epic proportions. April 26, 1986 marked the day of no return for the residents of Pripyat, just north of Kiev. It was here that Units 3 and 4 of the nuclear reactor of Chernobyl exploded, spewing radiation as far as Scandinavia and Japan. It was here that the dangers were kept from the residents, who witnessed "outsiders in strange suits" with geiger counters come to "clean up" the plant. It was days before the government decided to evacuate the population, telling the residents they would return shortly. Pripyat is still uninhabitable. This was the biggest disaster of the industrial age. More radiation was unleashed than at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Vegetation, cattle, milk, and even firewood was, and continues to be, contaminated all over Belorus and Russia. A whole generation is growing up surrounded by sickness and death. As the spectre of failing nuclear reactors looms large, especially in the former Soviet Union, this film will forever be a chilling reminder of the potential for disaster. High School College Adult
