Crested Butte, Colorado, is a former coal-mining town whose territory in the Rocky Mountains remains in conflict. This classic documentary takes us back to 1984 when we first meet miners who reflect on their coal mining days before the mines closed; this is the perfect segue to the bigger issue at hand: whether AMAX Inc. (now Climax Molybdenum) should mine molybdenum at nearby Mount Emmons or not. From the corporation's side we learn that molybdenum is a silvery metal used in jet airplanes, automobiles, solar panels, and drilling machinery, and its mining would bring jobs to the area. On the other side we hear from Town Planner Myles Radaman, former mayor W Mitchell, Population Biologist Dr. Paul Ehrlich, and Ski Area Developer Howard Bo Callaway, who argue against mining the mineral. In the end we learn the conflict was decided on the side of the townspeople and today Crested Butte remains a popular destination for outdoor activities, such as skiing, mountain biking and hiking.
