All over Colombia community recycling projects are under way. One of them promotes filling old plastic soda bottles with trash, such as candy wrappers, and use these tightly stuffed bottles as bricks to build community housing. In the bigger cities, such as Medellín or Bogota, it has become quite a trend to fill these bottles and deliver them to community organizations, which then pass them on to the communities in the country to use them for their building projects. This 30-minutes medium format documentary investigates this trend and follows those trash-filled bottles to their final destinations in the countryside, to explore the pros and cons of using these old plastic bottles filled with trash as bricks to build schools and community centers. I conceived and created this film together with my wife, Claudia Trujillo, who also “stars” in it as the “investigator.” I am the director, camera man and editor of the film, which was released in October 2017. Whereas this is not the only documentary on the subject, this film is unique in taking a truly objective viewpoint, neither advocating nor condemning the trend, but rather just investigating its ups and downs.
Largo Film Awards writes about Waste Dreams: “The creator and presenter is obviously passionate about this topic and that comes across well in the film, but not only is she passionate, she is also unbiased and she gains perspectives from a variety of people, not just those that are pro the project. This provides the audience with a well-rounded and informed documentary.” All three building projects followed in this film are schools and in each of those projects the children attending these schools have been heavily involved in the building process. As Largo Film Awards also points out, this highlights in a unique way the impact such projects may have on the next generation.

The waste pickers in Brazil are almost all Afrodescendants. Ms. Cacula is one of them, who crosses the city balancing piles of metal and plastic on top of her freighter. These cargo bikes adapted by her and other waste pickers from Ceara, Northeast of Brazil, turn the “rich garbage” of Brazilia into an opportunity for popular, autonomous and clean recycling, trying to pave the way for a better life in the Brazilian capital.
