This 42-minute documentary chronicles a one-week malunga training camp held at Desert Coursers Nature Resort in Zainabad, Gujarat in February 2003. Prior research by the Jairazbhoys had revealed that fewer than ten Sidis (African Indians) could still play the instrument, all of them elderly.
The purpose of the camp was to bring together some of these elders to teach the basic techniques of malunga construction and performance to 16 Sidi youths, selected from different parts of Gujarat.
Scenes include:
- assembling 16 malunga bows especially made for the camp
- group instruction in playing techniques along with singing and dancing
- worship at a Sufi shrine in natural context
- spontaneous comic disco dancing
- brief excerpts from the final costumed Sidi performance
- interviews with the students
- concludes with a return to Gujarat one year later to evaluate the impact of the camp on the participants

A film about mobility, human creativity, and technology in a Sudanese truck community. The English Bedford-Lorry was introduced to Sudan in the late 1960s. Since then, local craftsmen technically modify the truck into an ideal vehicle, adequate for traveling off-road and for performing customers’ expectations. The craftsmen and drivers call the lorry “Sifinja” because it is soft and comfortable like the plastic slippers it is named after. I...
A film about mobility, human creativity, and technology in a Sudanese truck community. The English Bedford-Lorry was introduced to Sudan in the late 1960s. Since then, local craftsmen technically modify the truck into an ideal vehicle, adequate for traveling off-road and for performing customers’ expectations. The craftsmen and drivers call the lorry “Sifinja” because it is soft and comfortable like the plastic slippers it is named after. In different places in Sudan the carpenters and blacksmiths not only create a shiny iron bride, but they change the whole structure of the lorry through a highly unorthodox performance. Following closely the daily work, art and history of truck-modding on the Nile, a fascinating way of African creativity dealing with global commodities – the automobiles - is opened up. The documentary weaves the original sound of hammering and sawing, drilling and riveting, into a rhythmic, exhilarating audio-visual adventure.

Every morning at dawn, Ida Pedanda, a Balinese Hindu priest, sets out to gather flowers that he will use in religious ceremonies throughtout the day. His daily journey takes him by the houses of people he has lived near all his life. He walks by the ocean he has fished in for nearly as long. And, on his way home, he passes by the establishment of his newest neighbor from Kentucky--Colonel Sanders. While Bali is host to a convergence of outside influences, the relationship of Balinese culture and society to those influences is a complex and intimate interaction occurring at the level of neighborhoods, families and individuals. The image of a barefoot Balinese priest passing a Kentucky Fried Chicken only begins to address the process of globalization that is underway on Bali. Such an image leads to a confusion, as one anthropologist put it, between "some ineffable McDonaldization of the world" and a much subtler process of cultural adaptation, resistance and exchange. The authentic Bali is sometimes imagined to be a place characterized by timeless tradition, unchanging ritual, hand-made arts, music and dance - incompatible with the "Western" influences that are finding their way onto the island through television, radio, and marketing. In Sight Unseen, the urge to classify the traditional versus the modern is addressed with a montage of visual juxtapositions: a line of women in traditional clothing parade before a Pizza Hut sign, a weathered stone statue grimaces in front of a bowling alley. These visual contrasts, though, can overemphasize superficial cultural change. The presence of Western influences on Bali are not a sign of the imminent destruction of an authentic Balinese culture, but rather become part of the processes of cultural reproduction. The film demonstrates the problems of neatly summarizing this process.
