NEW GIANT JET
The "Concorde," built jointly by the British and French, makes its debut. Carrying over 140 passengers, it's expected to cut the U.S.-Europe flight time in half when it goes into service in 1971.
FINLAND
Finland observes 50 years of independence from Russia in a national celebration which includes a memorial to her war dead, and a gigantic formal reception for diplomats.
TELESCOPE
The largest telescope in Europe goes into operation in England. The 8-foot-wide mirror will transfer the images of distant stars to photographic plates. It's accurate to one-millionth of an inch.
BETHLEHEM
Tourists and religious pilgrims flock to Bethlehem to observe Christmas and view the sacred spots such as the Church of the Nativity. It's the most unrestricted observance in 20 years.
TREE
Santa comes by minicar to place the star on top of the National Christmas Tree on the White House lawn. The tree, a 70-foot beauty, is lighted as part of President Johnson's annual "Pageant of Peace."
FASHIONS
Spring fashions from Tunisia have that "Scheherazade" look and feature ottoman dresses and floor-length gowns; sheer capes over bare backs; even a wedding gown made like a Tunisian burnoose.
RAIDERS-OILERS
A Hewritt Dixon T.D. and four field goals by George Blands beat the Houston Oilers, 19-7. The victory makes the Oakland Raiders AFL Western Division champions.

KENNEDY HAILED IN SOUTH AMERICA:
President Kennedy begins his venture into personal diplomacy in South America in Puerto Rico, where he is greeted by huge throngs before leaving for Caracas, Venezuela, his first stop in South America. The President's trip was planned to further the Alliance for Progress, a plan for the economic betterment of Latin American nations. Mrs. Kennedy surprises the throng in Caracas by speaking to them in Spanish. The Presidential party then goes on to Bogota, Colombia, where he ends his tour with an appeal to Latin America to remember that a democratic government can further economic progress without the repression of liberties.
LIBERTY Bowl: Syracuse Edges Miami - 15-14:
The temperature is 25 degrees in Philadelphia as Miami of Florida meets Syracuse in the LIBERTY Bowl. But the boys from Florida don't miss the sunshine as they turn on the heat and lead 14 to 0 at the half. But- Syracuse is used to coming from behind, and All-America Ernie Davis leads them in a comeback and they wind up on top- 15-14.

His arrival is shielded by a tight security guard but he receives a standing ovation by the delegates. The British have developed a lifeboat that looks like something designed for interplanetary travel. It's a covered craft of steel and plastic with an asbestos lining. It comes through a test of fire a great success. It should be a real lifesaver in case of fire at sea.

FRENCH SKIERS BEGIN TRAINING:
There's more than snow in the air at Val 'dlsere, France. Their ski team begins training for the winter Olympics that are just over the horizon the practice periods are five long hours every day. You have to be a dedicated skier to win yourself a place on the French team. They aim to rip entire pages from the record book come next February.

JOHNSON AND ERHARD CONFER AT RANCH
Holiday time at the Johnsons. The President plays host to the Press as they await the arrival of Chancellor Ludwig Erhard of Germany. The LBJ Texas spread is the scene of a barbecue and then the President treats the newsmen to an example of his crowess astride a Tennessee Walking Horse. Later the Chancellor is met at the airport and then treated to another barbecue that features the playing of famed pianist Van Cliburn. In a joint statement the two men say their countries pledge themselves to easing the East-West cold war tensions.
SMOKE TRAPS HOTEL VICTIMS
As the Roosevelt Hotel in Jacksonville, Florida, blazes firemen battle through fumes and fire to rescue trapped guests on upper floors that their ladders won't reach. Navy helicopters join in to rescue others from the hotel roof as 21 victims are trapped and die in the hotel that was jammed with fans who were in Jacksonville for a football game.
BEARS WIN PRO TITLE
The New York football Giants invade Chicago loaded for Bear as they take on the Western Champs for the title. The New Yorkers make it hot for the Bears in the first quarter despite the freezing temperatures. The Giants score first on a recovered fumble, then the tide turns dramatically as an interception by Bear Larry Morris leads to a chicago touchdown. The Giants chalk up a field goal but then the Bears come back with another interception that leads to the winning score. Chicago 14, New York 10.
