We all know the exciting, sweaty, scary, uncomfortable feeling arriving at a border. You will have to submit yourself to the guards standing in front of you. In a split second your mind is alert. “Do I carry any illegal product, are my papers in order, did I take my “special” cigarettes out”, what about the snake skin boots..? Probably everything is in order, you played by the rules, but…Power is not in your own hands at the border. They, the guards will check your papers, they might check your luggage. The guards may want to check your body and maybe even they will want to check the inside of your body. Life is out of your own hands. The film Borders starts at the Schiphol Airport Detention Centre. Its unique filmmaker Jacqueline van Vugt was able to film inside. Here we encounter the border between The Netherlands and Nigeria, by Clara, 16 years in the Netherlands. She is expelled, back to her country of origin, Nigeria. In Nigeria the journey starts a new. Border by border the film Borders follows the route from Nigeria to The Netherland, a route taken by many immigrants. The subsequent Borders are the protagonists; Nigeria-Niger-Burkina Faso-Mali-Senegal-Mauretania-Marocco-Spain-France-Belgium-The Netherlands. The Borders change; the people, the light, the colours, the temperature, the use of technical instrument, …but the influence of power is always there!at The anguish, the scary thrill, will posses you - being there – at the Borders.

A country that has been ravaged for years by a devastating civil war, in which nearly 200,000 Mayan Indians were systematically massacred, is currently one of the most violent countries in the world. Drug cartels, corruption, rape, and violence rule everyday Guatemalan life, with little repercussions for offenders. As prosecutor, Claudia seeks justice for her nation’s victims, and begins an assault that starts at the top, with government officials. She manages the extraordinary achievement of convicting former dictator Efraín Rios Montt on charges of genocide. Since her first year in office, Claudia bravely gave access to documentary filmmakers, which resulted in an intimate glimpse into the life of a woman who will stop at nothing to break the cycle of violence and seek justice in the name of her nation’s people. Her achievements don’t come without sacrifices, however, and it isn’t long before the government seeks to remove Claudia from office and threatens her life. This intense film shows an unfiltered look at the way those in power will stop at nothing to silence those who threaten their existence. Managua is the capital, but Granada is its oldest city. Despite its coastal beauty and colonial architecture, the picturesque streets of Granada are littered with kids ("chavalos") who have succumbed to the country's economic circumstance. Many are uneducated and addicted to drugs. The drug of choice due to its affordability and accessibility: glue-sniffing. With no means of receiving an education, learning basic job skills, or finding employment, these children are left with no options and no hope.
CAFE CHAVALOS: OVERCOMING THE STREETS follows Orlando, Oscar, Juan Carlos, and Moises as they attempt to rehabilitate their lives through a program called Cafe Chavalos - a culinary school, restaurant, and rehab center. In their young lives, they have endured drug use, gang violence, abuse, and family suicides, but miraculously found hope through this program. They learn to cook, wait tables, and run a business. However, during the course of their own journey, the Cafe runs into financial problems (funded by a non-profit group), lose their head Chef, and is forced to close. How does that affect the boys? Will the cafe re-open? Can they persevere?
Nicaraguan filmmaker, Alberto Chamorro, documents the poverty and the lives of these chavalos with compassion, respect and objectivity. Through his observation, he witnesses a transformation not only of the boys, but of a city that has been defined by its circumstances and not by its beauty.

In the mid-1970's, Cambodia was the victim of a brutal genocide, when the communist Pol Pot regime exterminated every fifth inhabitant. In less than four years, hundreds of thousands were murdered, and over a million died as a result of starvation and disease. We hear from those who lost their families as well as from former guards who perpetrated the crimes. A guard who beat prisoners claims he was forced to commit torture; the alternative would have been his own murder. He feels terribly guilty now and has confessed to his family. Sorya Sim of the Documentation Centre says "The purpose of documenting is justice and memory." The Centre collects material to prosecute the Khmer Rouge and to educate the younger generation about the events. Recently, a peace treaty paved the way for the first real evaluation of the Pol Pot regime - and perhaps for reconciliation. This process is difficult in a country like Cambodia, where it is seen as "wrong" to talk negatively about the past. The Institute for Social Development organized several peace marches and four reconciliation meetings and at one of these, a number of Khmer Rouge leaders apologized. For many people, and for the media, saying "I am sorry" was not enough. Kassie Neou of Cambodia's Institute for Human Rights, believes the peace marches promote the possibility of "...living together in understanding, and that way people can focus on harmonious ways of living." But many carry mental and physical wounds, too fearful to speak out about the atrocities of that tragic time. High School College Adult
