In 1965, the villagers of one district of Central Vietnam found themselves on the front lines of an increasingly brutal war. For these villagers, the war became a struggle for survival. They would choose a remarkable course of action. Rather than flee their ancestral village, they dug a series of tunnels and moved their entire communities underground. Through the personal stories of tunnelers, as well as one American former P.O.W. held in the tunnels, we are transported into this subterranean world.Rare archival footage, much of which has never been seen in the West, reveals miles of catacombs where as many as 2,000 people took shelter. We follow an artist who takes his son back to Vinh Moc village, and explains how markets, theaters, hospitals, and schools were created in those war years. An American Air Force historian gives his perspective. This extraordinary film contains a capsule history of the war, a war which the Vietnamese call "The American War." High School College Adult

Marking the 70th anniversary of the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, the historian Professor David Reynolds re-assesses Stalin's role in the life and death struggle between Germany and Russia in World War Two, which, he argues, was ultimately more critical for British survival than 'Our Finest Hour' in the Battle of Britain itself. The name 'Stalin' means 'man of steel' but David Reynolds' penetrating new account reveals how the reality of Stalin's war in 1941 did not live up to that name. Travelling to Russian battlefield locations, he charts how Stalinist Russia was almost annihilated within a few months as Stalin lurched from crisis to crisis, coming close to nervous breakdown. David Reynolds shows how Stalin learnt to compromise in order to win, listening to his generals and downplaying communist ideology to appeal instead to the Russian people's nationalist fighting spirit. David Reynolds also squares up to the terrible moral dilemma at the heart of World War Two. Using original telegrams and official documents, he looks afresh at Winston Churchill's controversial visit to Moscow in 1942 and re-examines how Britain and America were drawn into alliance with Stalin, a dictator almost as murderous as the Nazi enemy.

The British fought the Second World War to defeat Hitler. This film asks why, then, did they spend so much of the conflict battling through North Africa and Italy?
Historian David Reynolds reassesses Winston Churchill's conviction that the Mediterranean was the 'soft underbelly' of Hitler's Europe. Travelling to Egypt and Italian battlefields like Cassino, scene of some of the worst carnage in Western Europe, he shows how, in reality, the 'soft underbelly' became a dark and dangerous obsession for Churchill.
David Reynolds reveals a Prime Minister very different from the jaw-jutting bulldog of Britain's 'finest hour' in 1940. A leader who was politically vulnerable at home, desperate to shore up a crumbling British empire abroad, losing faith in his army and even ready to deceive his American allies if it might delay fighting head to head against the Germans in northern France. The film marks the seventieth anniversary of the Battle of El Alamein in 1942.
