With exclusive access, and for the first time ever, the secret mission that sparked the Romanian Revolution in December of 1989 against dictator Nicolae Ceausescu is revealed. This documentary is the chilling Cold War account about what actually started the bloody uprising on December 15, 1989, when supporters of the Protestant Minister László Tokés in Timisoara rallied around his church to protect him from eviction by the military and by the Romanian Secret Police, the Securitate.
It all began in Montreal, Canada, in March of 1989 when two French-Canadians – former Quebec Cabinet Minister Michel Clair and Radio-Canada reporter Réjean Roy – were sent to Timisoara to secretly record a TV interview with Tökés, the country's biggest dissident. What transpired was a cat-and-mouse game between the two Quebecers and the Securitate who followed their every move. Despite all odds the tapes got out to the West and the interview was broadcast that summer. As a result, Tokés was given an ultimatum: leave the church by Dec. 15 or be removed. Tokés refused to vacate, and the results were horrendous – more than 1100 people died in the fighting that started that day.

Only 2,500 survived. Drancy explores the structure of the Holocaust in France: how the Nazis brought the French police and gendarmerie under its control, ordering them to conduct massive round-ups of Jews in Paris and other cities; how the Vichy government instituted anti-Semitic laws, without pressure from the Germans; and how French authorities acted to divide the Jewish community, undermining resistance and streamlining the work of the Final Solution in France. Drancy includes interviews with survivors as well as with bystanders who were witnesses. Rare archival footage and photographs round out the documentary. This film tells the harrowing story of the Japanese occupation of Singapore from 1941-45. Archival film as well as fascinating interviews with two historians, Professors A. Jayathurai and Brian Farrell, relate the tragedy of this important theater of war. But it is the story of Alexander Colburn a young Scotsman who had recently signed on for a four-year stint as a pharmacist in the bustling colonial city that gives the dramatic history a personal dimension. Instead of enjoying a brilliant career in Singapore, Colburn witnessed its swift and violent end, as well as the symbolic end of the British Empire. In the 1930s it was widely believed that Singapore was an impregnable fortress. When the well-trained and equipped Japanese invaded Northern Malaya in 1941 shortly after Pearl Harbor, they easily defeated the under-prepared Indian, New Zealand and Australian troops who had joined the British there. When British officials realized Singapore would fall they evacuated the colonials, leaving the Chinese, Indian and Malay populations to fend for themselves. Throughout this Colburn worked as a medical volunteer, cleaning up the bodies left from Japanese bombing. Two British battleships were sunk with nine hundred British sailors lost and the British surrendered after six weeks. Under the Japanese occupation, one hundred thousand prisoners of war were arrested and imprisoned or executed in six weeks. Colburn was taken prisoner by the Japanese and spent four years in horrendous conditions, with almost no food or medicine available. He used his experience as a pharmacist to help his fellow inmates as much as he could. It is estimated that twenty to thirty thousand people perished in captivity. As Prof. Jayathurai says, "Churchill gave up Malaya for the defense of Europe. This was the end of the British Empire; everything after that was borrowed time." College Adult

In this documentary on post-war El Salvador, people from all over the country recount the nightmare of the twelve-year civil war that came to an end in 1992. The filmmaker and his crew traveled throughout the country interviewing people who had witnessed some of the grimmest events of the war. He goes to the village of Mozote where American-trained soldiers of the Salvadoran army massacred 800 citizens. Similar round ups of civilians took place in many areas and we meet survivors who recall the loss of their loved ones. In the mountains of Guazapa and FLMN guerrilla shows where he lived and how he fought for six years before being captured by government forces. A student describes what happened to him and his teachers at the University of Central America. Jesuit priests were leaders in the struggle for justice and often targeted for assassination by the government forces. In contrast to these testimonies, a member of the upper class complains that the church had become mixed up in politics. Although scars from the war remain vivid, people are rebuilding their lives. Farmland is being cleared and replanted, new construction is taking place in the city. This riveting documentary follows step by step the persuasive media offensive waged by a powerful public relations firm for their client in the Balkan War in 1992. It shows how the key phrase "ethnic cleansing" was used in a media campaign by the firm Ruder Finn. There, James W. Harff orchestrated the campaign that implied "ethnic cleansing" was a human rights violation harking back to the Nazi era. This key phrase was planted in the media around the world with the certainty that this euphemism for genocide would jolt the West’s collective memory of past atrocities to lead world opinion against Serbia. It worked.
Harff describes his strategy: how he pursued print and TV journalists, and finally the White House. He used the photogenic Bosnian Foreign Minister, Dr. Haris Silajdzic to make Bosnia’s case more compelling. Serbian leaders including the former prime minister Milan Panic, admit making serious errors in putting forth their side of the story.
So successful was Harff’s campaign to vilify Serbia that it became the first nation ever to be expelled by the United Nations. Following that, the UN set up a tribunal in The Hague to examine war crimes.
"The effect of the PR company was …to implant this very black-and-white picture in the minds of the public…" says Sylvia Poggioli of NPR. And Margaret Tutwiler, former State Department spokesperson says that none of the parties were totally innocent. Focusing on her brother Kalman, Anna recounts tales of a mischievous boy who tried to escape the Warsaw ghetto with her.
Her daughter Roz, an artist, devours the stories and paints his portrait over and over again. As Kalman's face emerges on canvas, the film travels back and forth in time from archival Warsaw ghetto footage to summers in a Catskills bungalow colony, from vibrant family life before World War II to today.
Four generations grapple differently with their shared history. In spite of parental attempts to shield their children from the horrors, Roz grew up entangled in her mother’s pain. Maya, an Israeli-born granddaughter, expresses her life’s passion by playing the viola. Performing with Arab and Israeli youth, she questions why there has to be war when she finds natural ease in making music with someone she’s told should be her enemy. Maya performs the original music composed for the film. Eleven-year-old great-grandson Roy wonders with concern how the members of his generation will understand the Holocaust when it seems like just another story. Anna, a survivor, lives with her pain, while never losing her commitment to living life to the fullest.
As the loving family that grew from two survivors celebrates together, the film shows how four generations find light even in the darkest of places—with a resiliency that moves viewers to do the same.

In Japan, atomic bomb survivors struggle with nightmarish memories and negative health effects; atomic veterans, down-winders, and atomic workers around the globe also continue to suffer from the effects of radiation exposure. The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 may have temporarily damaged the soul of Japan, but has anyone ever taken an account of what the Bomb has done, and continues to do, to the soul of the country that dropped it? How might we alter the soul of a nation in order to truly live without the threat of total destruction?
In a globe-trotting journey through various perspectives on nuclear weapons, filmmaker Bud Ryan takes us from the Peace Museums of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, to the "Nuclear Science" museums of the United States; to the place that birthed the atomic bomb, (and cares for it still) the state of New Mexico, where Ryan now lives.
Featuring former U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz, authors Gar Alperovitz and Jonathan Schell, Japanese bomb survivors, and many others, THE FORGOTTEN BOMB explores our pre-conceptions about nuclear weapons and their history, investigates how they inform our sense of identity and discovers what the Bomber can learn from the Bombed.
