Louis Sarno's notes on liner card (ms ink) – 'Tracks 1-7: from the women's dance Moyaya held on 30 March & again on 1 or 2 April 1987 at Kenyé. Girls are initiated into moyaya on the occasion of their first menstruation. I do not know the details, and this is not only the only moyaya I ever recorded, it is also the only one I ever witnessed. Except for the percussionists, no men took part, although many gathered to watch the dance. On the first morning. Two women of the neighbouring Sangha-Sangha tribe, one the oldest daughter of the Sangha-Sangha chief, took part, each dancing to one song. The singers formed a large circle around the dance area. On the first morning (tracks 1-3), a Sangha-Sangha woman danced solo in each of the first two songs. The third song had no dancer. On the second morning, a couple of days later, (tracks 4-7), again the Sangha-Sangha women danced, one in each of the first two songs. In the third and final song, the girl for whom the moyaya was being held (Njongé) appeared in a grass skirt and, after much encouragement from the women, overcame her shyness and danced. It is invariably sung and danced following the death and burial of a woman, and may sometimes go on for several nights. It is also sometimes danced on the night before a woman marries. When performed in its proper ceremonial context, it is strictly forbidden to the men, Only my ignorance and Bayaka tolerance can be thanked for my close-up recordings of Limboku during my early years with the Bayaka. Since then I only record Limboku from afar, although very occasionally the women, during a performance of limboku, have paused near my house while singing, to allow my microphones, usually set up outside my doorway or on my roof, to record close-up. Sometimes the women wander all around the camp or settlement while singing and dancing limboku, sometimes they remain seated in a large group, typically in front of the home of the deceased woman. They conjure up their spirit limboku, heard as a deep hooting voice. Track 8: limboku song (first I ever heard) sung by women and girls, afternoon 27 Feb. 1987 at Kenyé. Track time: 3m. Tracks 9-11: from a brief limboku that took place on the night of 25 March 1987, at Kenyé. Earlier that night, two men visiting from Mosapola got into a fight with everyone at Kenyé. Later, when everything was calm and people were asleep, a group of women came from the camp of a man named Doombu (at that time Kenyé was a conglomeration of 4 or 5 camps within shouting distance of each other) singing Limboku. Afterwards, they returned singing. They were joined by women from the camp I was staying at (Singa`'s). Then they returned singing to their camp. Total time: 18m.
