When adults fight, children are the losers. They have neither mental nor physical strength to deal with the horrors of war. Finding headless bodies, limps and massacred people leaves scars never to be healed. This is the situation in Afghanistan
War trauma seriously affects the emotional and intellectual development of children ruining their chances of growing up as balanced individuals. A capacity much needed in a country suffering from decades of war. Six million Afghan children are estimated to be steeped in crises. Hundreds of billions of dollars are spent on the war. Compared to these amounts hardly anything is spent on the children. Experience shows that it is easy, cheap and feasible to help the minors and thus reducing the risk of them becoming future aggressors. This documentary pictures Afghan children, their life and background and some of the people deeply involved in helping children victimised by war.
The documentary has been researched since 2003 – shot in 2007 and 2008 in several locations in Afghanistan from Tora Bora to Kabul

An estimated half a million women are being transported to Western Europe by sex traffickers every year. It's a multi-million pound business where, for the traffickers, the rewards are high and the risks are low. But, for the girls, the consequences are brutal and potentially dangerous. Following a route which begins in the former Soviet Republic of Latvia and leads to Denmark, Ireland and the UK, Sue Lloyd-Roberts uncovers a murky, cruel world in which employment agencies seduce young women with false promises, unscrupulous pimps abuse them and the police and judiciary turn a blind eye to this contemporary form of slavery.

The American bombardment of Afghanistan and the subsequent overthrow of the Taliban left a power vacuum that the United Front (aka the Northern Alliance) were all too eager to fill. George Bush's Coalition Against Terrorism didn't have any better ideas, so their blood-stained misrule from 1992-96 - when warlords jostled for power and in-fighting left tens of thousands dead - was forgotten. Now they form a large part of a NATO-approved interim government. But in today's Kabul, the Kalashnikov rules. Violent crime is on the rise once again. Can the United Front's former warlords bury their differences for long enough to achieve democratic rule? Award-winning reporter Phil Rees sounds a note of caution.

An estimated 100,000 Chinese people entrust their lives to human smugglers or 'Snakeheads' every year. For huge fees, they are promised a new life in the West. Correspondent traces the business of human smuggling to its source - Fujian, China.
