It is the engaging portrait of Emil Synek, the filmmaker's grandfather, who was a revered playwright, journalist and politician in Czechoslovakia during the era of the Second World War and the Communist takeover. When he was filmed, Emil Synek in his eighties, lived in exile in Paris with his constant companion, a poodle Fifi. Emil's life was shaped by the politics of Europe. When the Nazis invaded his country he fled to London, where he joined the exiled government of Eduard Benes. In post-war Czechoslovakia he served as a diplomat until the Communist takeover of 1948 forced him and his family to flee again to the West. All his works and any mention of his life was obliterated from his country's history. His story echoes Czechoslovakia's struggle for freedom. It gained independence in 1918 only to lose it to Hitler's invading army. In 1945 the exiled government was restored but was overthrown three years later by the Communists. Ending Welfare As We Know It follows six welfare mothers over the course of a year as they struggle to comply with new work requirements, find reliable child care and transportation, battle drug addiction and depression, confront domestic violence, and try to make ends meet in the new era of welfare reform. By profiling families living in Wisconsin, Florida, and New Jersey, states that implemented their own reforms before the passage of the federal bill, the program offers the public a preview of welfare reform as it unfolds throughout the rest of the country. Each of the states featured has reduced its welfare caseload by imposing strict new rules which include work requirements, time limits, and special provisions for teen mothers. Some states offer job training, education, child care subsidies, life skills classes, and more. But which measures are most effective? More importantly, what has become of the people who have left the welfare rolls? While the documentary reveals that the new work requirements and time limits are motivating many welfare recipients to go to work, it also finds that many of the people we are pushing off welfare are not landing on their feet. As this program reveals, there are no pat answers, and the solution to welfare dependency are as complex as the reasons people turn to welfare in the first place. College Adult

FIDEL provides a unique view of Cuba’s controversial and most polarizing leader. In 1968, Castro took filmmaker and activist Saul Landau on a week-long jeep ride through the eastern mountains. There, he plays baseball with a group of peasants, visits his pre-school and trades jokes with a 98-year old man. Fidel also listens to the people’s concerns about food distribution, bad roads, and transportation. Landau captures Cuba’s revolutionary chief early in the morning in his tent. The camera zooms in on his dirty and delicate fingernails holding his trademark cigar while he tells a story of Símon Bolivar and offers tactical advice to guerrilla warriors throughout the Third World.
The film contains rare and fascinating archive footage of the Bay of Pigs invasion and scenes of Che Guevara alongside interviews with political prisoners. Spectacular photography and editing with hot Cuban music provide the cinematic aesthetics that give this film beautiful form to accompany its exciting content.

At the age of eight, filmmaker Robyn Paterson greeted Comrade Robert Mugabe with flowers as he stepped from a plane at a Zimbabwe air-force base. She and her best friend, Mercy, were poster children for the new Zimbabwe. Robyn as pale skinned as Mercy was dark, the girls were a symbol that all was well in the independent nation. But it was not. Only a few miles away, Mercy's Matabele tribespeople were being massacred by Mugabe's special forces....

A generation later, Robyn begins a high-risk ground search across Zimbabwe - desperate to know what has happened to her friend. Along the way she faces the dangers of filming in a country hostile to media, the shock of what is still going on behind closed doors, and the stark differences that she and Mercy have come to symbolize. A gripping, heart-wrenching, and very different look at the Mugabe era.
