FRIGHTENED NATIVES FLEE IN PANIC BEFORE JAPANESE ADVANCE
(173)
TIENTSIN, China -- Military occupation of this salient point in Japan's offensive against China is marked in the frantic community by scenes of disorder as invading soldiers compel refugees to submit to search and seizure within the Japanese concession. Ignorant natives jam all roads leaving the city in an effort to escape the invading troops but watchful sentries break up the mobs and search everyone for arms. HIGHLIGHTS IN 1931'S NEWS
(431)
The parade of events during the past year dealt disastrous blows throughout the world. The major catastrophe of the period was the floods at Hankow, China where upwards of 500,000 persons died in one of the most terrible tragedies that ever visited the Orient.
The most terrifying earthquake disaster the Western Hemisphere has known nearly wiped Managua, Nicaragua, off the face of the globe.
The Bourbon dynasty, successors to the throne of Spain, fell before revolutionary forces, and a monarchical government that had endured since 3,000 B.C. retired from existence as Alfonso XIII abdicated and the nation became a Republic.
Aviation history continued to be made in 1931, with Harold Gatty and Wiley Post setting their plane Betty Mae down on Long Island after circling the globe in a little over 8 days.
Daredevil flying contributed the greatest thrill in the thrilling history of the newsreel screen, with the crash of Lowell Bayles. Screaming through the air at 300 miles an hour, Bayles' plane, twisting and turning, plunged to earth and catapulted the intrepid pilot to his death.
This symposium of the great events of the year would be incomplete without 1931's best laughs -- and a couple of 'em are included that have shaken rafters throughout the civilized world -- and uncivilized, too.

THE FINEST IN THE INDUSTRY
ADVANCE INFORMATION FOR NEWSPAPER PUBLICITY AND EXPLOITATION
NEWS HIGHLIGHTS OF 1964
The year 1964 was a year of change. A year that saw the rise and fall of national leaders around the world. Once again the strength of democratic processes demonstarted in the United States as Republicans and Democrats fought it out for the Presidency. The loudest voice of all was the quiet American voter. He sent Lyndon Baines Johnson back to the White House with a 16,000,000 plurality over Barry Goldwater.
In BRITAIN, voters there ended 13-year Conservative Party rule. Lord Home resigned and Harold Wilson, Labor Party leader, took over as Prime Minister.
KHRUSHCHEV joined the "outs" but behind the Iron Curtain it's different...he had the red carpet pulled out from under him by his "friends" on the Central Committee.
Death came for some world figures.....
NEHRU, the only Prime Minister India has ever known since independence was accorded a moving tribute by millions of Indians.
Death also claimed the man who has been called the greatest military genius in American history - GENERAL DOUGLAS MacARTHUR.
HERBERT CLARK HOOVER, 31st President, recieved a national tribute as he lay in state in the nation's Capital.
Historical precedent was shattered by POPE PAUL VI as he travelled first to the Holy Land and then to India.
The United States increased its aid to South Vietnam, but political uncertainty there continued to hamper the war against the Vietcong rebels.
A lot of loud-mouthed dames roared along the eastern seaboard. Hurricane Hilda was the loudest of the lot.
ALASKA was shaken by the greatest earthquake ever recorded on the North American Continent.
A bright chapter was in the course of human events, written with the passage of the Civil Rights Bill.
A mighty voice was heard in space as Ranger VII took four thousand pictures of the Moon in man's greatest space achievment.
Finally, 1964 will go down in history as the year of the FAIR--- the New York World's FAIR, the greatest exposition ever staged.

CHANGCHIATUN, Manchuria -- Loosely organized "irregulars" meet a thrust of the powerful Japanese columns, seeking to occupy this town, a strategic position along the branch line of the Mukden-Peiping railroad. Zero weather and formidable well-trained Japanese forces conspire to force the grimly determined native soldiers to relinquish their tenancy of the position. Strengthened by re-enforcements, the invading troops push on toward their objective after a short skirmish in which the local defenders are forced to evacuate the town, in one of the critical high spots of the conflict.
