This seminar centers on the soap opera villain. Moderator Steven Bell, director of the Museum in Los Angeles, introduces the evening's panelists: Kimberlin Brown (Sheila Carter on The Bold and the Beautiful); Stephen Nichols (Stefan Cassadine on General Hospital); Joe Mascolo (Stefano DiMera on Days of Our Lives); and Michael Corbett (David Kimble on The Young and the Restless). Corbett opens the discussion by describing the fun of playing a villain on daytime television. Brown then discusses her approach to her character, explaining why Sheila does the evil things she does. Mascolo picks up the discussion, describing his zest in playing Stefano; then Nichols talks about his character and the reason for Stefan's villainy. Mascolo makes the point that he doesn't believe these villainous characters wake up in the morning with the aim of being bad people, they are "good people who do bad things." Each panelist goes on to explain why s/he does or does not find playing an evil character therapeutic. Brown recalls approaching her program's producers in an instance when she thought the script made her character too wicked, and Corbett expands on this theme. The panelists also touch on the following topics, among others: fans' perceptions of them; public responses to their characters' misdeeds; the relative merits of male and female villains; and the longevity of villainous characters on daytime dramas. Bell opens the seminar to questions from the audience and the panelists cover the following topics, among others: Nichols's feelings about being romantically paired with Mary Beth Evans again; the challenges that actors face when new writing teams are hired; their identity as the "custodians" of their characters; the actors' relationship with their writers; the intense work schedule on daytime drama; Sheila's physical appearance; the actors' work finding motivation for their characters' evil deeds; and the way in which a popular character can lose his or her integrity.
