In March 2011, during the "Arab Spring", the Syrian people demanded the end of the regime and the democratization of institutions. The government responded to the protests with repression and violence, while promising free elections. On May 7, 2012, these elections were held. All the opposition movements in power were excluded, qualified as "terrorists." In the weeks that followed, most of the towns and villages in Syria rebelled. The revolution was beginning. In July 2012, the revolutionaries, organized in "Free Syrian Army", opened two fronts: in Damascus, the capital, in the south, on July 17; and the other in Aleppo, the economic lung of Syria, in the north, July 20.
