Ella Fitzgerald's idea to sing the songbooks of major writers proved smart, savvy, and artful. By the time she began to record Sings the Harold Arlen Song Book in 1960, she had sung the songbooks of Duke Ellington, Rodgers & Hart, and Irving Berlin. This relaxed and tastefully arranged set showcases Fitzgerald in her prime, confidently engaging 28 of Arlen's best songs. Familiar pieces like "One for My Baby" and "That Old Black Magic" make appearances, along with all-time classics like "Stormy Weather" and "Over the Rainbow." On this latter tune, she adds the front verses, an appealing addition that few will be familiar with. Billy May's orchestra lays down a quiet mix of horns and strings that perfectly supports Fitzgerald on songs like "When the Sun Comes Out" and "Happiness Is a Thing Called Joe." Four bonus tracks, including two alternative cuts, spice up the package. A particular oddity, "Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead," converts surprisingly well into big-band jazz. The attractive CD set also includes the original album cover, an outline of a face drawn by {%Henri Matisse}. Sings the Harold Alden Song Book is an exquisite album, a classic in vocal jazz, and one of Fitzgerald's best recordings. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr., All Music Guide

Ella Fitzgerald combined forces with a studio orchestra conducted and arranged by Marty Paich for this 1962 studio session covering selections from hit Broadway productions, featuring compositions by Rodgers & Hammerstein, Lerner & Loewe, Adler & Ross, and Frank Loesser. While the arrangements feature brief ensemble passages, the songs are a vehicle for the singer and are deliberately brief. Surprisingly, few of these Broadway tunes became standards for jazz singers. "Hernando's Hideaway" found favor with Fitzgerald and she added it to her repertoire for time; this version is entertaining with a prominent role for the bass clarinet, though it is somewhat hampered by its rather mundane lyric. The campy "Steam Heat" is inevitably associated with Shirley McClaine, but Ella makes a good effort on a number that would be considered a misfit by most of her fans. "If I Were a Bell" is fairly swinging; while the swinging "Almost Like Being in Love" is clearly the gem of the date, although both songs feature a distracting backup vocal group that should have been omitted. Ella's enthusiasm and spirited vocals carry the day on this fun-filled CD. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide

For every volume in a budget-collection series that effectively compiles 10 or 12 of an artist's best-known songs, there are several that fail miserably -- whether because they make a mockery of the notion of "greatest hits" or because an artist is far too valuable to constrain to a dozen songs. Mel Tormé's edition in The Essentials series from Warner Strategic Markets fails not because of a lack of great music -- nearly everything Tormé recorded is very good at worst -- but because the material Warner owns comes from two radically different periods in his career. The first three songs here are dreamy mid-'40s selections from Tormé with his excellent vocal group the Mel-Tones; the final track is the novelty "Comin' Home Baby," his early-'60s fluke pop hit. Between these two periods lies the bulk of Tormé's artistic career, but little of it appears here. Barring a few more solid '40s performances, and several excellent sides from his 1963 Songs of New York LP for Atlantic, The Essentials has little of worth to the interested beginners who would buy this type of collection. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
