SPANISH NAVAL SHIP HERE AFTER 18,000-MILE CADET TRAINING TRIP
(111)
NEW YORK, N. Y. -- For the first time in history the flag of the new-born Spanish Republic flies over a vessel in an American port as the 3-masted "Juan Sebastian Elcano" drops anchor after a cruise through South Atlantic waters. Manned by 310 men, with a complement of 80 midshipmen, the barkentine is a picturesque sight in the shadow of Manhattan's towering skyscrapers. The middies go through their paces up the rigging of the masts in a swift and impressive dressing-ship drill, prior to their return to Cadiz and a career in the Spanish navy.

Goose-stepping through a picturesque drill, the regiment is reviewed by their president, ex-Chancellor Dr. Johann Schober and Frederick Gustavus, Cardinal Piffl. Incidentally, these are the last pictures ever taken of the great clergyman who died soon afterward, mourned by a nation in whose life he was a powerful figure.

The terrific shock rocks dozens of buildings to their foundations, many of them as far as half a mile away. Rescue squads and police searchers rush to the scene, attend sufferers and check the possibility of fire. Investigators believe the accident resulted from a break in a gas-line caused by coal deliverymen resting a chute on the pipe.

In the curtain raiser to the international games, Wilmer Allison, Austin, Texas whirlwind, beats Marcel Rainville, the little French-Canadian, in straight sets. The victory gives the star-spangled team the edge in the first step toward the coveted trophy held by France.
INDIAN OARSMEN VIE FOR CHAMPIONSHIP IN ANNUAL RIVER MEET
(119)
XOCHIMILCO, Mexico -- Redskin paddle experts jam the race course stream with their "chalupas" in the yearly battle for supremacy. A keen eye to put their tiny cigar-shaped canoes through the maze of competitors and steady under-footing to keep right side up are essential requirements to stay in the struggle for position. Over-anxious boatsmen become too enthusiastic as the rivalry waxes hot in sight of the finish line, and their efforts are rewarded by a plunge into the swift currents. Rosenda Padilla, husky copper-colored waterman, manages to retain his equilibrium and wins after a desperate battle over the two-kilometer course.
SUDS FLOW AS "FEDS" DESTROY 7 CARLOADS OF ILLICIT BEVERAGE
(99)
NEWARK, N. J. -- U. S. Department of Justice laborers take free and lusty swings at the bungs in 1800 barrels of confiscated illegal amber fluid, and the government warehouse almost flows off its foundation as the golden river wanders toward the sewer. Fearful that the precious containers might again find their way into bootleggers' hands, the agents cart the carefully charred casks off to the city refuse pile and burn them. The end of a million foaming steins of bubbling brew.
ITALIAN ACE, NUVOLARI, SETS WORLD MARK IN GRAND PRIX THRILLER
(119)
MONTE CARLO, Monaco -- The break-neck race around the hair-pin turns and up and down the death-dealing hills and grades becomes the most bitterly-fought battle in years as the Italian speed-merchant and Rudolf Caracciola throw all caution to the winds in a remarkable exhibition of daredevil auto driving. Neck and neck they thunder up the winding approach to the famous resort. In a blazing finish Nuvolari flashes over the last stripe a minute ahead of his game competitor, as the rest of the huge field comes in sight of the end of the course. A new record is hung up by the victor, smashing the time set by Louis Chiron last year. The Italian finishes the 199-mile grind in the remarkable time of 3 hours, 22 minutes, and 25 1/5 seconds.
